Upgrading the power supply for Wiim ultra

There is only one way to find out if the digital output of an Ultra sounds different/better/worse than that of a Pro (with a third party power supply) digital output in a hifi system is to listen to it in that very hifi system. Only you can decide what’s best for you, @venkyrenga.

Is the built in power supply of the same standards or better than Allo Shanti?
It's unlikely. Given the cost of implementing a proper low noise linear power supply - it's not feasible to fit that into a device that is priced the way an ultra is. 🤷‍♂️

Even a good low noise SMPS would be difficult to include given the cost constraints.

This is why I prefer electronics that use external power supplies because it allows you to "upgrade" without modding the device + looking warranty etc. Like many of the OG bluesound node users did!! 🤔

How bad is the Ultra PSU then? From measurements I’ve seen of its analog outputs it’s fine that way, but how does it look on the power side of things? I haven’t seen what it sends back to the grid.

Side note: The only linear power supply in my setup is the one that turns my 52 year old turntable. All others are switch mode.

This video is, among other HW details of the WiiM Ultra, talking about the power supply. Have a look.

There are two other threads here, regarding changing the power cable for the wiim ultra. There are Lot's of silly comments on them but a few others have found an upgrade of the power chord has provided a better sound in their system. Even adding a couple of ferrite cores to the bundled cable can provide an improvement.

This is the one that I use. I prefer this as it doesn't have a massive plug that gets in the way of the other ports.

So do you suggest that I rather stay with Wiim Pro with Allo Shanti rather than upgrading to Wiim Ultra. Keep in mind that I won't be using the DAC or ADC in the Wiim.

Was there a feature available from the ultra that you wanted over the pro?

that's what i would do in your situation. but you could still use the Ultra somehow in your multiroom setup? or media centre hub - near your TV like many others do...

for critical listening and the best streaming-only/digital transport performance, imo the Pro is the best WiiM. it has the least amount of "extraneous" hardware like a screen etc that can increase EMI/RFI inside the box, and a decent processor etc. (although i assume the Pro Plus would be almost identical i assume - haven't tested it myself)

and tbh the pro with a good quality LPS like Allo shanti probably rivals more expensive streamers like the bluesound node, volumio rivo etc.

Listening to music is a very subjective experience, and if you think that makes it better then it does for you. The cable looks nice, and that matters too, but I fail to understand how, unless all the wiring back to the power station is all rhodiumed, siliconed and silvered, how it could improve how your equipment works.

Shielding a power cable like shown can lower RF noise back down the cable from the Ultra SMPS. If you have equipment that can pick this kind of noise up you could have a problem that this shielded cable then can minimize.
