volume increase

In my case it's Spotify

This was also a problem on my Linn amp for which a firmware update was issued, and I also have a vague memory a similar issue was fixed by a separate firmware update on WiiM.

It would be worthwhile raising a ticket to WiiM as they’ll have a better memory of whether this was an issue they thought they had addressed in a previous firmware fix. By all means, refer them to this post.

Something similar happens to the volume in LMS when Spotify Connect is involved. Even when it isn't being used.

I'm not sure if the problem, at least in my case, is Spotify... I listen for hours and hours with Spotify, no volume problems, as written before and it only happened twice while I was fiddling with the peq/roon correction settings, the machine stopped and so did the app stopped responding, but the volume increased and decreased on its own. However, it hasn't happened in two months! And everything works perfectly (thank goodness!) I hope it's not a new bug and it starts doing it again, I hope not! I don't want to ruin the speakers

How hot does your Ultra run?

I run my Ultra for 10+ hours daily and it has never felt hot. Nor have I ever had such a problem.

Is it possible that you may have inadvertently pressed the volume button on the phone too long?
I have it in a 17 inch by 14 cabinet and I can feel the heat coming out

my case I was just sitting on my couch have asleep when it happened, sure woke me up in a hurry! and tried to use the remote and my app to turn it down with no response from either

I had the same volume problem. I've had my Ultra since September and twice I came close to damaging the speakers. In my case the problem arose after having done the roon correction, when I listened to the changes (peq) and disabled or activated them the machine seemed to freeze and did not respond, the volume went up to 100% and then went back down... however, this happened in the first month of operation and has not occurred again until today. I had also reported the anomaly to wiim via the app but they had not encountered any problems. Now to be safe I limit the volume to 80%
My setup: Ultra (preamplifier)
Advance paris smart BX1 final amplifier
yes I also submitted a ticket on the incident and they replied back saying to not reboot the unit while it was going through it`s fit, I replied back saying that I have no choice that i have thousands of dollars worth of equipment and I wasn`t going to stand by and watch the flames

If you are using the RCA outputs to connect to your amp you can change the output voltage settings. Default is probably 2V so changing it to 500mV will protect your speakers if it has a fit.

I agree, almost afraid to turn it on lately
I understand you very well! The only trick I can find now to feel more comfortable is to set the volume limiter to 85%, even if I often have to go back to raise it to get more push and this thing is annoying. From my analysis of what could have happened at least in my case, perhaps it was the app on my tablet or the remote control, I remember (after the scare) that while I was trying to set the PEQ or eliminate the changes, to increase or decrease the volume from both devices, everything remained blocked for a handful of seconds and the machine started to increase (up to 100%) or decrease the volume on its own. My advice is to put the limiter on, at least protect the speakers!

I wonder why people have amps that are so powerful that they can blow the speakers.

That said, I always have the amp set to 33% at turn on (digital volume) and control the volume from WiiM, unless I really need to play loud. I don't have a sub, so this works fine

You are actually using dual preamp then, which is not a correct approach.

There are many use cases for using a higher output power amplifier than the rated peak input power of the speakers (because of fewer distortion).
And there are many audiophiles using power amplifier without volume control for better quality.

If your amp is an integrated amp, you are using dual preamp with 2 volume controls which introduce distortion.

If your amp is not an integrated amp, your amp volume control is just an attenuator, which means you should turn the wiim to 100% (0 dbfs) for optimal headroom and quality.

for safety, if using a pure power amplifier, limiting the maximum volume level of wiim to where 85dB SPL slow weight c can be measured for -20dbfs pink noise signal at the listening position.

-20dBfs 24 bits 48kHz pink noise:

This is the most safest measure right now

I have active wireless speakers with a hub, so digital signal all the way to the DAC in each speaker. The digital volume control do not introduce distortion even when applied twice. But that was not really the point. It was about limiting the max power output to not harm the speakers.
