What are you listening to?

Place Vendome - Streets Of Fire (Melodic Hard Rock, excellent vocalist. Sounds a bit like Journey)

Tom Petty - Wildflowers

As I often do, this has a little story... some years ago we were in Florida staying with my sister-in-law who lived there at the time & I saw that Tom Petty was playing in Tampa with Steve Winwood as support.

For years I had wanted to catch up with Petty & as a Floridian this would be a 'home' gig for him so I got tickets for me & my Daughters boyfriend. Winwood played for nearly an hour & a half & Petty approached three hours, a really memorable gig. That night, on the live version of this song Honey Bee, the guitars were heavy, grungy and full of fuzz distortion, a great track on the album but something else entirely in that setting - 'sublime' doesn't' come even close!

Back home I enthused about having finally seen another one of my heroes at last - to which my mate Mike replied "what are you talking about, you saw him at Knebworth in '78!!" I genuinely don't recall that, Genesis, Jefferson Starship, Roy Harper, Devo definitely but how the hell did I somehow miss Petty, there was only one stage? Doh

...imagine this version with the guitars cranked up to 11 & with more distortion

Slambovian Circus of Dreams - Flapjacks From The Sky.

I would guess that (almost?) nobody on this forum has heard of this band…. Many years ago one of my friends picked up a DVD of the album in a charity shop based purely on the the look of the artwork & the original weird name of the band (Gandalf Murphy and the Slambovian Circus Of Dreams).

Talkin' to the Buddha is a truly outstanding, long & psychedelic piece, slowly building to a nuclear whiteout apocalypse climax & has two incredible guitar sections at 3:51 and from 6:50. It needs to be played very loud yet it's both sensitive and melodic throughout! This is not my all time favourite piece of music but it so easily could be, especially on the various occasions I have watched the band live.

Sharkey, the guitar player often switches to electric mandolin & another track ‘Tink’ is a great example of his virtuoso playing. Also well worth listening to & it's on the album 'The Great Unravel' or the 'best of' shown at the bottom which has both pieces.
