Billy Idol - Vital Idol

There are some songs that I have to own on vinyl regardless of what I think of the artist. White Wedding is one of those.

…& I bought this when it came out only for the 8:25 extended version which is really great. However, the LP is so well mastered that the whole thing could easily double as a hifi reference demo disk with extended & remastered versions of some of his ‘best songs’. I'm almost embarrassed to admit that I thoroughly enjoyed this as my 'last' LP for today 😗
I also have the LP (EP), bought in the 80s after Rebel Yell came out. I recorded Vital Idol on cassette for my master (I was an apprentice). I remember him telling me the next day that the cassette had come at just the right time, as he had bought new floor-standing speakers and the music had beautifully showcased the stereo effects. Yes, Steve Stevens on guitar/keys contributed significantly to Billy Idol's success 👍.

Nirvana - Nevermind

This album starts with my all-time favourite song, it’s been played to death but I never tire of it.

Strummed guitar intro demolished by Grohl’s drums, pure raw emotion in Cobain’s low then screaming vocals, interspersed loud & quiet sections. Visceral and beautiful at the same time.

I have not and never will hear anything as perfect as this, just a shame that most guests will leave my funeral if I insist my wife plays it (…including her).

Pixies - Surfer Rosa

Following on from my last post, up to that point in time (1991) I considered my favourite song to be Where Is My Mind? from Surfer Rosa. Nirvana took so much influence from this band & especially this album, their debut and the best IMO.

(I never got to see Nirvana but saw the Pixies at Glastonbury in ’89 & ’14)

Genesis - Trespass

Nursery Cryme was the first Genesis LP I bought but I got this later. It predates Collins & Hackett but is still a classic from the Gabriel era with a lot of 'delicate' guitar work from Anthony Philips.

The Knife is the standout cut (White Mountain comes close), full of foreboding aggression building from the flute section onwards. When it finished their set the first time I saw them live it was borderline terrifying to a young teenager  but I still bought Trespass soon afterwards.

I don't think I knew that Phil Collins wasn't on this. I also hadn't realised they had two other drummers on "From Genesis To Revelation". So four drummers over three albums. Very Spinal Tap 😂

Looks like Zap Rekowski has been deleted for some reason.

Shame, as I like a lot of what he shared & I'm convinced he was also Hulle Sack prior to that, also deleted when ZR immediately carried on with the same sort of stuff.

Lets hope he gets a third reincarnation, it will be obvious soon enough if he does 🤞
