What is the best audio connection

I was wondering what is the best connection for listening to my music for the best audio experience.

I have been been playing my flac files via plex at 16/44 - however today I noticed if I play via my mini then audio out to my ultra the but rate is higher.

Thoughts?

It can be transcoded / upsampled but won't be "better" than the source. Better is subjective.

What exactly do you mean when you say audio out? The WiiM Mini has an optical S/PDIF output and an line level input (combined into the same socket). Both carry audio signals, one digital, the other analogue.

Using the analogue 3.5 mm TRRS output into the Ultra's analogue RCA line input makes no sense at all. You'd be going through the Mini's (modest) DAC and then straight into the Ultra's (still not SotA) ADC again. That's two unnecessary conversations.

Yep, that means two audio outputs to chose from (like I mentioned in my original reply) and we still don't know which of them the OP was referring to.

Apart from my senior moment confusing the WiiM Mini with a Mac Mini 🤦‍♂️ it's still true that using the AUX OUT from a WiiM Mini into the LINE IN of a WiiM Ultra makes absolutely no sense, unless the optical S/PDIF input is already occupied by another device (e.g. CD transport).

But since OPmis asking which connection to use I assume he has the choice.

The only reasons I can think of for connecting the Mini to the Ultra are a) AirPlay support and b) adding a second line input to the Ultra (which again doesn't make sense when if not using the optical connection). :)

Why connect them physically at all?
Just link or group the devices and they will (link)play over the network.

I hope that it what the OP is doing.

That is what I though the OP meant but I am wondering if he has set the Ultra to have fixed output so is in fact upsampling 16/44.1 stuff somewhere.

Technically the optical connection would provide higher sampling rate and higher bit depth.

But yes, If it's all just about getting lossy AirPlay2 support with the Ultra it might not be worth it.

We've been wondering which different connections you have been comparing so far.
  • Analogue line (aux) output?
  • Digital S/PDIF (optical) output?
  • Linking the Mini and the Ultra with no physical connection?
Personally, I would probably go with the optical connection, if this input is still available on the Ultra. But it also depends on why you are even connecting the two, what is your goal in doing so?

The image is Ultra settings not Mini

I read the text against anything, but what makes you think I've been assuming that screenshot was from the Mini configuration?

I might just be too stupid, but how do you know if @buitbyty has some other device plugged in the optical input of the WiiM Ultra already or if this input is still available to connect the Mini?

You are assuming he has or wants to plug it into the Ultra. He hasn’t said whether it’s that or he is casting to a group.

No, I have been asking how he want to connect the Mini to the Ultra (or more precisely, which connections he's been trying so far).

I also mentioned my personal preference.

Read again.
