What is the HDMI good for on Ultra if you have an AVR doing HDMI switching?

I thought, apparently incorrectly, I could run HDMI audio from AVR to Ultra while playing music on Apple TV 4K sending that audio into AVR then to Ultra then back to AVR amp portion. I prefer the Ultra DAC for Music and ATV is 24/48.
Since I use the AVR as my HDMI switch between AppleTV, Blueray, and OTA tuner/DVR controller, is the HDMI just… nothing?

It's used as from a TV with ARC/E-ARC, so you can send audio from your TV (or any device conneceted to the TV) to your Ultra.
