After using my Wiim Ultra for TV sound via the HDMI-ARC output on my TV for a year with no issues, I'm suddenly getting no sound.
The Wiim Ultra is able to detect when the TV turns on and auto-switch to the correct input. Volume selection passthrough is working on both ends (if I change the volume on either device, it correspondingly shows the change on the other device). But no sound, aside from a few times that I managed to get the sound to work briefly, and intermittently, before cutting out again.
Other peculiar things I've noticed:
- The Wiim app on my phone will often show "detecting audio" on the HDMI input screen. Other times it's "No audio." Other times it looks like it should be working correctly (it displays "LPCM" and a bitrate), but still no audio.
- The EQ indicator in the bottom right corner of the input screen says "custom," even though I always keep EQ off. When I click through to the EQ selection screen from there, it shows the EQ toggle as "off." If I try to turn it on, it gives me the "working" animation for a moment, then switches itself back to "off" (but still shows "custom" on the input screen.
Here's what I've tried:
- Swapping out the HDMI cable for a brand new HDMI 2.1 cable -- no difference whatsoever
- Rebooting both devices multiple times, going through the process to reset the HDMI handshake (which includes fully unplugging all devices and leaving them to sit for 5 minutes before plugging them back in)
- Switching the Wiim Ultra between the newest standard firmware and the "sound profile" beta, just in case it was something in the latest firmware update that caused this. All issues the same.
- Playing around with every setting I can think of, on the Wiim, on the TV, and on my AppleTV (though the problem persists whether I'm playing content from the AppleTV or from an antenna, so I don't think the AppleTV is involved.) All settings that I can think of (TV audio output selection, audio format, etc.) are as they "should" be, and how they have been for the past year when I wasn't having this problem.
- Letting everything sit overnight, turned off, and trying again in the moning.
For the record, all other functions, and audio inputs, on the Wiim Ultra are working normally. It plays music, streaming or via phono in, without a problem.
At this point all I can think is that it's an issue with either 1. the TV's HDMI ARC port, 2. The Wiim Ultra's HDMI in port, or 3. The Wiim Ultra's firmware.
My next steps, I guess, would be to try another TV, and try factory resetting the Ultra, but just checking to see if anyone else has encountered this issue before I do that. Obviously, if neither of those things work, I'll submit a ticket to Wiim. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
