Why does DLNA/UPnP suck?

I've tried various DNLA servers

Asset
Minimsever
Synology
Twonky

And various apps, bubble, wiim home app

Asset initially looked ok as it has decent amount of customisation and through the wiim app, the main menu looks ok, however non music items for the wiim device are still on the screen taking up space, and currently I'm reading/writing to the NAS and whilst this is happening Wiim app/asset is SLOW. Like one minute to go into A branch. It also doesn't cache the images so as you scroll it loads then it's ok.

Then with apps unless you pay for them you get ads

Cannot access the UI/music player over IP from a computer. If this is the state of DNLA I can see why people don't use audio streamers.

And yet with all the above issues and limiations there is one specific server/app that doesn't have any of those problems. Any guess what? :ROFLMAO:

Clearing out the appdata\emby...tens and tens of thousands of files, so big it halts during winscp during size calculation.

taken screenshot of HD remaining before I delete...

Which plugin (and which version) do you use with MusicBee?
So far I am using the included base version that was done by the MusicBee developer. There is a plug-in that was provided by an advanced user that I may try once I have spent some time with the vanilla version. I want to see if either are any better than using Asset, which I have used for a very long time.

Call me stupid, but despite having used MusicBee for years (purely for managing my library) I wouldn't know how to use it as a DLNA server, except by using a plugin.

I was under the impression that the original plugin writte by Steven was long deprecated (and it didn't come included with my installer, for sure) and just recently someone had started a "modern" fork of this old plugin:

I'm puzzled. 😵‍💫

I dunno.🤷‍♂️

In the Preferences>Plugins tab there was already a UPnP option there when I installed MB a while ago. Updated now to use the newer 2025 plugin version on their site. But I don't see any difference. Both seem to work the same way. All 3 of my WiiM devices can see it. I am currently playing three different songs from 3 different methods without an issue. Plus using MB on he desktop too.

I also played around with the (original) plug-in a long time ago and quickly discarded it because normal gapless playback wasn't possible. You had to activate continuous streaming for gapless playback, but then there was no track information anymore... Foobar was at this time more suitable as a UPnP server.

Does Gapless now work normally with the 2025 plug-in?
