It's been a while since I've looked at this, going back ages ago, the Mini wasn't able to play Hi Res 24/192 in a multiroom setup I belive as the hardware couldn't deal with it so there was no upgrade

If you now have say 2 Pros and a Mini in a group, firstly will they work together and do you have to change any settings or will they just default and play to the lower resolution?

48khz / 16 bit is the max for multiroom regardless of which devices are grouped.

I know Amazon used to do 24/192 and was the reason I updated my Mini's to Pros.... maybe they were the only provider to achieve that.
I’m not sure if Alexa MRM groups are also constrained to 16/48 too - that’s all I’m seeing grouping three WiiM devices together. Plus the WiiM home app no longer seems to show what’s playing when I use Alexacast from the Amazon music app to that MRM group. I’ve submitted a ticket to WiiM

What do you get if you group three WiiM devices in Lyrion? You would probably have to use local music.

I’m sure WiiM have sold loads of devices for use with Lyrion - perhaps more than anyone ever expected when they were persuaded to add Squeezelite back at the beginning. I see lots of references to WiiM over at the Lyrion forums these days.

Just played some Qobuz tracks to 5 WiiM devices (including speakers) and they all play at 24/192 together from Lyrion.
What streaming protocol are they using? Is it UPnP / DLNA, or something else? It’s a pity that WiiM can’t do the same thing instead of their unsuccessful attempts at DLNA Casting.

Lyrion uses a protocol called SlimProto. The big difference is that there is a server doing the sync using time based references. AFAIK WiiM sync is player based and uses some form of “listening” to each other to achieve the sync.

Were they in sync? Syncing has been an issue with multi-room and high rez.
Lyrion sync will generally cope with 24/192 as long as all players have good network connections. One player with a poor WiFi connection can cause all players in a sync group to have problems. If all players are wired you shouldn’t have any issue

This has been an informative discussion, thanks. I recently bought a wiim mini to use in my office system and have started to dabble with multiroom. So does this mean that if I try to play hi-res files from a usb connected to the amp ultra in my main system through the mini in my office, it will only play up to 16/48?

Only if you’re grouping the amp ultra and the mini to play the same audio. If not, the mini can happily access the usb’s files and play at full resolution - the usb drive just appears as another home share server.

So, can I conclude that in Burnside's test that all 5 of the devices played in sync? Just want to check.
