WiiM Pro Plus volume setting?

Hi all,

I’ve just got a Pro Plus to provide better streaming to my Yamaha RX-V585.

It’s connected to the Yammy by RCA. I’ve noticed that if I set the Yammy volume to about 30, which is comfortable for net radio, spotify streaming, tidal streaming, i need to set the Pro Plus to almost 100% to get close to the native Yammy volume output.

Is that because I’m using RCA output? Is there any risk of running the WiiM at 100% - heat or audio distortion? Will it be different if using digital? I’m worried about getting a huge sound shock at some point :)

Thanks.

Hi

There's absolutely no problem with setting the Pro Plus volume to 100%. Many users keep it set to 100%.

Have you tried WiiM Home Device > Settings -> Audio Settings -> "Fixed Volume Output"? There's also the Aux Out Level setting you can max out. Also, when using the Pro Plus DAC, I gather there's a "Pure Direct" button on your Yamaha remote to bypass the receiver's DSP. You want to set this correctly to avoid having the Yamaha convert your Pro Plus analog output to digital and back to analog again - this could mess with your volume:sneaky:.

Have you tried a digital coax connection? Your yamaha has a decent DAC that can handle the top speed of the coax connection (probably 192/24-bit).

Pure Direct doesn’t make any difference to the volume.

I can try digital but I thought the WiiM might have a better DAC than the Yammy, hence the reason for using RCA.

On my Pro Plus, I have the Line/RCA output level set to 2Vrms, and I have plenty of volume. What is your setting? Perhaps if it's lower than 2Vrms, increasing it may help?

Based on the manual, the line-in voltage for the V585 is 200 mV, so I don’t think changing the line-out voltage in the WiiM app will affect the volume. As @BMeek mentioned, connecting via digital might allow you to lower the volume on the Pro Plus. However, as mentioned earlier, the Pro Plus’s volume is fine even at 100%.

As I suggested here before, please try a coaxial (or optical) connection.

Same as yours. 2Vrms. A bit later I’ll swap the RCA for optical and see if that makes a difference
Your earlier assesment that the WiiM's DAC is superior is technically correct, but the yammy's DAC is fine and of course it comes down to what sounds/feels better to you. Maybe try another RCA analog input?

Unfortunately, as far as I know, while the V585’s Pure Direct mode bypasses the DSP, it does not bypass the DAC. As a result, when using analog inputs, both the Pro Plus’s DAC and the V585’s ADC/DAC are engaged, which degrades sound quality.

However, as you mentioned, the OP’s personal preference is what matters most.🙂

Huh. That's weird. "Pure [bullshit] Direct"😀.

These big integrated AVRs need a roadmap to navigate the various settings - usually in an odd hierarchy.

Thanks all.

I’ve tested as far as I can be bothered. I tried using RCA, coaxial and optical into the Yammy. With volume on the Pro Plus fixed at 100%, sound levels in the Yammy were pretty much the same. This was irrespective of the source within the WiiM app (net radio, tidal). The volume output from the yammy was about the same as audio played from that unit itself (not streamed from the Pro Plus). So if anything, using the WiiM at anything less than 100% actually reduced the volume output from the yammy.

Happy so far. A slightly shaper sound (I think). I’m not sure the cost (AUD$279) justified any difference in sound, but the WiiM app is better than the MusicCast one. The customisation options in the WiiM app are much better. I also like being able to play the same audio from the Pro Plus fixed to my Wiim Amp Pro in another room (and vice versa).

Time for a coldie and some tunes…
