Hi guys, I need some advise. I have a Wiim ultra and considering purchasing a Chord Qutest. I am led to believe that I could hook it up with a usb connector but would RoomFit still work ? Can I still calibrate room characteristics etc. is there a better way to connect via RCA/BNC instead. Sorry I am sure this may have been talked about before. Many thanks in advance

RoomFit™ is performed on the DSP of the WiiM streamer, which is separate from its DAC, so room correction still functions even with external DACs. Connection method does not matter.

Use USB. And... try it without RoomFit (with all bit perfect settings set correctly) to check how it sounds. You may like it.

Thank very much

Just a quick update. I have now bought a second hand Qutest and have it connected via USB which I understand will allow for higher bit rates and will make use of the Chord clock rather than the Wiim and so eliminating any clocking issues (so I am told?). In any casse, it sounds really detailed and the stereo seperation is amazing.

@adias I have tried turning both RoomFit and PEQ off and it is still surprisingly good. However, I am not a bit perfect supporter. For me the Roomfit corrections sound better and adding small changes via PEQ on top to fine tune does improve the sound for my ears. I guess this is subjective. The interesting point for me is that I do not need so much tweaking with PEQ afterwards as I did with the Wiim DAC to get a similar sound. Have you changed the output voltage at all? does it make any difference to sound quality or just volume.

Also, I had originally thought that connecting the Qutest using RCA analog out from Wiim would bypass its DAC so could connect to QuTest using BNC / RCA lead. Would this be better than USB? I am assuming USB also bypasses the Wiim DAC? I dont have an BNC lead to try this

Thanks for the answers and info above everyone.

I would check an optical connection for a comparison with the USB audio.

The qutest's usb input does allow higher sample rates, but the wiim will output 192khz max.
Yes, any digital out from the wiim will bypass the wiim dac.
If the qutest is doing its job properly then there shouldn't be any clocking issues regardless of the connection.

This only affects the wiim analog output.

The qutest is a dac. The wiim's analog output is, well, analog, not digital.
You'd connect the wiim (digital) coax out to the qutest bnc in, with a suitable lead / adapter.

Just a quick update. The Qutest came set at 2 v ouput which gives a very rich warm sound. Set at 1v though and more detail is heard. A quick change of PEQ and I can add the warmth. So I will stay at 1v for now but I have a feel I will be changing frequently over the next few weeks 😀

On the Ultra the output voltage pertains to line out as already answered. On your DAC it will depend on the connected amp.
