Hi - I heard a WiiM Ultra a couple of weeks ago at a HiFi show in Bangkok and liked what I heard. I use Qobuz on my desktop and phone and the staff at the show said that Qobuz Connect will be supported with the next softare update. So yesterday, I went to a hifi shop here in Bangkok to listen to a WiiM Ultra again. At the shop, the sales staff could only get connectivity and sound via Bluetooth. By wifi, it appeard to be connected but there was no sound. At this point they started talking rapidly in Thai and I couldn't keep up. I know they said the Ultra had the latest software and kept mentioning "the codex." They ended up saying that, because Qobuz isn't officially available in Thailand, WiiM devices sold here don't support wifi connectivity. I'm skeptical because we successfully connected via Bluetooth. Can anybody explain why this happened and if there is a fix? Thanks.

Welcome.

Do you live in Thailand?
It's possible that qobuz connect isn't available in Thailand, but as you use it on your phone (and assuming you live there) the comment that qobuz isn't available seems strange.
You should be able to use qobuz with an ultra in a number of ways even if qobuz connect isn't available.
e.g. chromecast from the qobuz app, qobuz from within the wiim app, upnp to the wiim from another app on your phone, such as bubbleupnp if android.

Thanks for your reply.
Yes, I live in Thailand and was told that Qobuz Connect was coming in the next WiiM software update. That was 2 weeks ago. So, when I went to listen at the hifi shop and saw Qobuz Connect on my iphone, I thought that the update had arrived. But, there was no sound. But, Bluetooth worked fine. So, it seems that the Connect update hasn't arrived. Looks like I must keep checking for the update.

Qobuz connect itself has arrived on the wiims (except mini), was just wondering whether it's a geography / location thing, like alexa cast not being available in some countries,

It could simply be that your phone and the wiim were on different networks. Would be the most likely explanation I reckon.

It may be a geography issue and I'll have to wait for the next software upgrade. I logged in to the hifi store's network so I don't think that is the issue.

The hifi shop said the same and the OP hasn't clarified how he actually accesses Qobuz.
I have a Qobuz account that I use now on my iMac. My iMac is connected to my DAC and I have no connectivity issues at all. I recently downloaded Qobuz to my iPhone because of the WiiM Ultra demo I saw here in Bangkok at a recent audio show. When I went to a WiiM dealer a couple of days ago, we were able to successfully connect my Qobuz account to the Ultra via Bluetooth and listen to music. But when we tried using the store wifi, we could see Qobuz Connect with a check mark next to it but, no sound came from the speakers. I thought that because the Ultra recognized my device and functioned via Bluetooth, that it "should" work via wifi connection.

So, I am curious about whether this is a geography/software issue or some setting I need to change based on my inexperience using Qobuz in this context.

Qobuz isn’t officially available in Thailand according to this help page

Yes, that's true but I use Qobuz on my home system via my iMac. Most of my listening is with vinyl but I'm trying to expand my horizons. So, it's very possible that I don't have a good understanding about how to use Qobuz fully. Which means my problem could be operator error. :~)

If it works on your iMac, you should try to use the Qobuz app from your iMac and set its output to Ultra Connect to play music through your Ultra on the same network. If that works, to use your iPhone as a controller will be a matter of proper settings.

I haven't purchased the Ultra yet; I want to listen to it using my music before I buy.

My guess it that knowing Qubuz is officially not supported in your country somehow your iMac and phone can access it anyway maybe using a VPN service or otherwise (a question already asked by multiple others here). The network/wifi in the store is not configured that way, Qubuz music service sees a connection coming in from a Wiim on a "regular" (without VPN) Thai network and because of that refuses to play. Remember that in this case the Wiim needs to pull the data from Qubuz directly and that is off course different when using Bluetooth from your phone to the Wiim since your phone is doing the actual playing (pulling the data) then.

The same vpn will also tunnel a Ultra. So if all clients are on the same network pipelined through a vpn to the Net, Qobuz Connect should work.

But only if the vpn is "system wide" meaning configured on a router or access point or whatever and all clients are tunneled through it that way. There are loads op vpn services that run on the device itself, like a phone, tablet, computer and such. But all that being said we don't know how the OP's phone/iMac can access Qubuz in an unsupported country.

I don't use a VPN. I use AIS which is one of the main Internet and Mobile phone service providers here in Thailand.

I don't use a VPN. Just a regular internet and mobile phone service provider.

So how do you access Qobuz if it isn't available in your country?
Isn’t there a loophole where if you buy it with, say, a uk credit card (maybe while using a vpn) that it’ll work anywhere? Sure I’ve seen similar mentioned when people from non supported countries have been able to use it in the past.
