Maybe I've got this all wrong but ...
I have a nas drive with a twonky dlna server with stacks of music.
I have my wiim ultra connected to my hi-fi, and through the wiim app I can play any track from my nas. So far so good.
I also happen to have a Google nest speaker.
The wiim is set up for Chromecast, called "craft room"
I've added it to Google home app and connected it to "craft room".
Looks like I'm destined for success...
I say "hey Google, play nils frahm on googlecast wim" but she doesn't understand...
I try "play nils frahm on wim" still she can't do it...
The nest will play from Spotify, but not from the wiim.
Am I asking too much?
Am I doing something wrong?
Will it work if I buy an expensive speaker, as I don't want to waste my money!!!
Thanks for any wisdom

Yes - it jumps straight to Spotify...
Sorry, I misunderstood your question. You can’t use a voice assistant to play local files - for one thing, Google (or Alexa for that matter) has no idea what files you have locally, nor can it access them. Voice control is only available for the cloud streaming services the voice assistant supports.

There's an Alexa skill called My Media which might be useful - https://www.mymediaalexa.com/

Years since I used that, I had actually thought the developer had abandoned it. There was even one that linked to Jriver - house band I think it was called. Like all skills, I found the extended syntax of “Alexa, ask my media to play..” tiresome.

Back to Google - you may be able to use Google assistant to play back tracks (up to 100,000 iirc) you have uploaded to YouTube music, although that’s not using your local library directly.

Ah... That's really helpful. Thanks. Do you know if I will be able to do it with a Sonos or audio pro?

Not sure if Sonos actually got their voice assistant off the ground and allowed voice control of local files - maybe a Sonos user may be able to clarify.

Audio Pro speakers are based on Linkplay modules that WiiM also use/enhance, so no go there either I’m afraid.

I'm not that fussed about voice control. I just want to be able to play the music, eg through an app on me phone. At the moment, none of this is really making sense!

Ok :)

From your opening post, I take it you’re happy that you can use the WiiM home app on your phone to play music form your NAS?

The most straightforward way of playing your local files to your Google Nest is via Chromecast - use an app like bubbleupnp on Android to play the files on your phone then use Chromecast to send that to your Google nest speaker, or if you have grouped the nest speaker and the WiiM in the Google home app, to that group.
