Wiim Ultra suddenly outputs maximum volume

Hi all,
I recently purchased a Wiim ultra and I’m super happy with it (except for the recent problem I’m sharing here).
My current setup is: Samsung tv (hdmi arc) Wiim ultra (usb output) smsl ps200 dac (rca) active speakers. I have also an active subwoofer connected to the sub output of the ultra.

Over the last 2 weeks, I had a very annoying issue happening randomly 3 times already:

While watching tv (Wiim volume around 20), the volume suddenly starts blasting at a crazy level, I’m suspecting the ultra goes to 100% volume. This is kind of scary and happens with no apparent logic and it is also very bad for my family’s ears and for my speakers which may get seriously damaged. Each time it happened I unplugged everything and the issue was solved, but it happened again randomly few days later.

Now family is asking to use tv speakers when watching tv as they are afraid this happens again…

Did anyone experience the same issue? Would appreciate your view on this.

Thanks

First time I’ve heard about this behaviour, and certainly one I hope I will not experience myself.
It is very important that you submit a ticket from the Wiim Home app when this happens. WiiM will investigate.

I had another device prior to the Wiim ultra (arylic bp50) which was also connected through hdmi arc cec, never had such issue. It would be strange that the tv starts outputing at max volume randomly.

From memory, there have already been reports of concerns of this kind sometimes...it was worrying...but not read recently...

There has been problems with the Apple TV remote that starts sending "volume up" constantly.

Try to reset the remote.

Hold the control center button and volume down button on the Apple TV remote for 5 seconds until the TV says it disconnected. Wait until it resets and you should be good.

thanks a lot, I will reset the remote as suggested. Hopefully this will solve the issue, I will update if it happens again

There are (few) ways to accidentally set the WiiM Ultra to fixed output volume (e.g. using the beta WiiM Home app for Windows), but as @hgo58 pointed out, the most likely explanation is some device on the HDMI interface running wild.

I'm using my WiiM Ultra with a Samsung TV (no Apple TV or any other external HDMI source connected to the TV) for many months now with no issue at all. HDMI ARC and HDMI CEC are tricky standards, unfortunately.

Good luck!

I had a similar issue, and discovered it had to do with presettings, where some of them were set to use a different volume. I'd suggest you try deleting all presets (assuming you have fiddled with those) and see if it happens again.

While watching a review video of the smsl ps200 recently published, I came across a comment that seems to be the explanation of this issue (see attached screenshot). The person refers to the fact that many of these dacs with usb input are not fully UAC compatible and may start randomly blasting sound at full volume. This is more in line with what I experienced as volume went maximum immediately and not gradually and I couldn’t reduce the volume using the remote (which would have been the case if the remote was sending an uncontrolled volume up signal). Also, before using the usb output of the ultra, I used the optical and coax output for a while (in the same hdmi arc cec setup) and never had any issue.
