WiiM Ultra: Vu-Meter (yet another request: Full Range / Volume Range)

Hi,

Regarding WiiM Ultra Vu-Meter (the one that exists already and hopefully future ones that WiiM Team manages to publish 🤞) I think it would be very nice to have this options:

1 - Volume Sensitive (the current only option - the needle maximum is related to output volume)
2 - Not Volume Sensitive (currently not available - The needle maximum should be related to the level of the sound on the source file at each moment - as it the output of WiiM is at fixed volume)

I use WiiM as a preamp controlling the volume in it.
Specialy when I listen at moderate sound levels (example at night) the needle movement is so anemic... I would like to see the "full-range" swing independently of volume level.

As stated at the beggining I would like to have these two options in the current (only one) vumeter and all future ones :)

BR,
Paulo

Hello. Im not sure... :)
For me its still just a nice toy (or should be) I dont expect professional meter especially not at such price. Professionals will rather buy RME or other pro devices...
So first it would be great to have preamp meter with different colors and linked to input - because for sure cover screen doesnt make sense for input other that network...

Screen display linked to input selection would be good.

But why not get something useful when it's possible? What do it have to do with the price?

You don't have to be a professional to have good use of a proper meter.

I just bought a Wiim Ultra and after looking through the very few screen options available I was happy to see a VU meter option, but immediately noticed when running the unit with a fixed volume (100%), the meter is cranking all the way up making it kinda pointless.

Kinda surprising something this obvious got through to actual release.

The issue is that the meter is showing output volume. As the WiiM Ultra is a pre-amp it should show input signal instead. See previous comments and the other threads about the VU meter.

What do you expect to see? As mentioned in post #24 the VU meter shows output volume rather than input volume but at 100% these are the same.

If the scale was correct it would actually work.

The meter should show the (logarithmic) digital sample value from --20 dBFS to 0 dBFS. The 50% value would be at -6 dBFS.

What does it show? I don't have an Ultra. VU meters on a Squeezebox Touch work fine 😃

It is essentially attached to the recording function, there, functional... after...

the only useful scenario in this case of the ultra to my knowledge was pointed out by onlyoneme...
intersample peak etc
but just an "over" alert for these rare cases would generally suffice very briefly... no need for a VU meter..

when we know the number of things pending, "beta" etc concerning essential things... the aesthetic things concerning just the screen of the ultra.... euhhh

As I understand it you will only see this on the DAC, never on the input.

I could use the VU meter for setting the best pre-gains on input and EQ.

But yes, it's mostly for a nice display but when having it, it would be good to have it to show correctly.

""the accessory...""
(and in any case only concerns the ultra)

clear correct pertinant "overs" would be much more useful...

That's why you have Pre-Gain in Audio Input settings to match volumes on different inputs. After matching VU metters will be more acurate working in range closer to 0db.
