WiiM:USB Disk

I bought my Ultra to primarily play my own music collection from an attached USB SSD, and it works beautifully with very high quality controls, conversion, app, etc.

My only issue is this: The Ultra automatically make my USB disk and its contents available on the Wifi network as “WiiM:USB Disk” to anyone who is logged in to the same wifi network. I do understand that this is a feature but there really should be an option in the settings to enable or disable this. We live in a busy house with many people (kids, friends, etc.) coming and going and I do have some privacy issues with this, especially that anyone logged into our network can easily just copy any of the files on the WiiM:USB Disk to their own device.

Has anyone found a way of disabling this feature?
Have I missed something?

I have sent Wiim a feedback but haven't heard back (yet).

Any tips would be highly appreciated.

I’d be surprised if WiiM would provide a means of disabling this as it would probably kill the Ultra’s access too. In order to facilitate access to the files on the usb drive, your WiiM device scans and indexes the files tags and presents them for access via a UPNP server structure. By their very nature, UPNP services are easily accessible by other devices on the network - indeed, this allows any other WiiM devices you have to access the library on the usb drive.

You may need to look at segmenting your network or hosting the files on a password protected file share on a NAS or similar.

Many thanks for the comprehensive reply. That makes a lot of sense.
I guess my best option, for now, is just to unplug the Ultra from power when not in use.
Cheers.

It might be sufficient to use “eject usb disk” under the three dot overflow menu on the usb contents page rather than turning off your Uktra as you may still want to use that for other functions like radio etc

Would you not be better controlling access to your network rather than to an individual device ? E.g set up a guest network for your occasional visitors/users

That certainly is an option but in our house its unfortunately easier said than done. I will certainly consider it.

Maybe a password access to the WiiM:USB Disk might be possible in the future instead of an enable/disable feature?

UPnP servers don’t support authentication so I don’t see this as possible. To quote Google, “UPnP operates on the principle of automatic device discovery and configuration without requiring user authentication or passwords”
