What I want is simple - an interface/app on my iPad that will let me stream Spotify and access ripped CDs (NAS) including playlists of both streamed and local music. I gather that I could play local music or Spotify stream using Wiim Home but unclear whether I could access the NAS files through the Ultra via Spotify on my iPad. Thanks for any help.

Yes, you can access both Spotify through the Spotify connect in the WiiM app as well as access a NAS directory in your server. Wether you use an iPad, tablet, android or iPhone to operate the WiiM app its up to you.

The Spotify app does not support access to NAS files ,only files on the device local to the device the Spotify app is on.

Spotify on my Mac will access 'local' files on the NAS. That's why I was wondering if Spotify Connect (which I am not familiar with) on the Ultra would behave similarly.

So, you don't have any media server software running on your NAS but just added the network path as "local files" in the Spotify desktop app?

I just tried that with Spotify for Windows and playing files from the network doesn't work. Spotify tells me that I had to "import" the files first (whatever that exactly means).

Spotify Connect is not something "on the Ultra". It's the protocol used by Spotify for accessing its streaming resources.

Yes, I just added the path to the 'Music' volume on the NAS. I expect it is DLNA or whatever. I understand now what Spotify Connect is. So the Wiim Home app would be the way to get to Spotify Streams OR ripped CDs but not some combined library. Thanks for your help.

It's rather "whatever". :)

Spotify seems to build an index and can play the files on the computer. But from my testing it is obvious that the Spotify desktop app does not support casting these "local files" to any other device, no matter what brand or type. If your goal is to use Spotify as the one and only app for organising all your music (as a "combined library", you better think again. This will not be possible, it's not what Spotify is intended for. Even for playback on the computer this looks extremely inconvenient to me. I can't see no navigational structure, just a very long plain list and a search field.

The WiiM Home app for mobile devices will seamlessly integrate all kinds of sources like streaming service, Internet radio, media servers, Plex, Roon, plain file shares and so on with a unified search feature ... with one exception: Spotify.

It's been really helpful getting feedback here before starting to rip >100 CDs to the NAS. Now what I will do is search each CD on Spotify and add it to my library if available. If not, then put it aside and see what I'm left with once I'm done. Then if I have enough that I want to have access to I'll either put them on the NAS or on a USB stick and get an Ultra and use WiiM Home and Spotify on an old iPad beside the amp to get to whatever I want to hear.
