AI - utopia or dystopia? A brave new world...

UK launches AI skills training courses for millions of workers!

I joined up to see what it's all about- essentially just a collection of links to 3rd party resources. The official website is a poorly designed & confusing jumble of onward links to 'resources'. I doubt that many workers will actually plough through any of this.

Here's a quote from the hub 😝

"Introducing the AI Skills Mapping Tool
Your intuitive, personalised pathway to AI mastery. This powerful diagnostic solution precisely identifies your current strengths, pinpoints skill gaps, and delivers tailored, actionable recommendations.". 💤💤💤

This 'initiative' has all the hallmarks of government contracts to third parties (eg 'This is a third party site, delivered by PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (PwC) on behalf of the Innovate UK BridgeAI programme.').

Waste of money and a waste of time.....

first they came for our gramophone records and i did not speak out as i was using cassettes .. then they came for our knobs and buttons and i did not speak out as i was using a smart phone .. who will control the 'wiims' when they become sentient ..

so called 'Ai' at this point in time is about data harvesting .. he with most data wins and then it will be about control. bezos and they boys will be sole suppliers to the US milatary and the corporate take over of american society will be complete .. unelected corporate bodies controlling the planet and its resources, as depicted in so many scifi films. The US will force everyone else to take sides using global banking pressure as they do with 'Cuba' then ... who knows

The public face of AI is essentially just a bunch of clever apps on smartphones.

Little to do with what is taking place 'behind the scenes' (robotization, autonomous systems, scientific research, generated media, etc)..

we have entered another 'industrial revolution' it was about control then and its about control now ..

The original IR took 2 centuries to permeate across the globe (& unevenly to boot). AI is developing at warp speed by comparison.

Essentially, it's a race between power blocks to achieve AI dominance (this partially explains why the US sees China as a threat to its current economic & military hegemony). At an economic level, China is way ahead, but way behind militarily. Europe is essentially a bystander wondering which way to turn, and Russia is a busted flush mired in its disastrous 'special action' activity.

The Chinese 'dancing/Kung fu' robots look amazing, but of course 'milatary' and 'policing' combat or intimidation use is where we expect to see these things .. or maybe a new global robot boxing/fighting contest .. what would it be called

the Russian one didnt look so good ..

I think people in this thread are reading into all the media hype a bit too much.
😬

Calm down lads - the chatbots do seem somewhat useful, impressive even - at times... But let's not forget that under the hood they are just models for predicting the next word (or token to be more precise) after a given string of words/tokens!! That's it!!

The big LLMs have been out for years, and I haven't perceived much progress some then! I don't deny we made a decent leap forward in generative AI when the very large models based on pretrained transformers (Chabots) and diffusion (image generation) launched, but that doesn't mean that robotics as a whole is automatically now close to being solved solved because of it, or that we have no use for people all of a sudden!! None of the companies building these models have any clear paths to profitability - unlike the early Internet businesses for example. 😂

Not to mention the fact that they are already running out of data clean of ai-generated slop to feed the models during training.

So just take a few steps back, touch grass and maybe realise that when Sam Altman and co want you to believe that AGI or AI superintelligence is coming soon - they have an agenda. Mostly keeping the lights on for now - because they are all burning through piles of cash...

I doubt it's just about profit - more likely that AI will be used to establish & maintain hegonomy of geopolitical entities over resources.
