BT Headphones switching but no music

Another question about the Ultra.

I sometimes like to use BT headphones to listen so I connected these to my new Ultra. This works fine. Switching the audio output to BT out, pair the headphones and hey: music. Then, when I switch them off, the output of the Ultra is auto-magically switched back to line-out and plays on, exactly what I want.

However, if I then switch the headphones back on, something goes wrong. Although the Ultra's output is switched automatically to the BT out again, and it shows the name of the headphone and 'Connected' in the app, the music stops. And I cannot get it to start again. Mind, the controls of the headphone work; I can select the next track, previous track etc, as can be seen on the Ultra's display. Only I never hear music. Switching them off again transfers the output to line-out, and music immediately plays. The only way to get music via the headphones again is to 'forget' and pair them again.

Is this how it is supposed to work?

My headphones never stop producing sound. But some headphones may be susceptible to such issues.

Please reboot the Ultra, unpair it, and then try re-pairing. Also, if your headphone is paired with other devices, unpair them all and then test.

Is the switchover to line-out and back working for you when you switch off the headphones and then on again?
Yeah
If I switching off the headphones while music is playing, the output will switch to the line-out, and sound will be heard from the speakers. Switching the headphones back on will restore sound to the headphones.

I tried this. Factory resetted both the headphones and the Ultra. Paired them again but unfortunately this made no difference. Exactly the same behaviour as before. A, well, back then to SqueezeLite for the headphones. Bit of a bummer, though.

Have you raised a ticket?
There may be something Wiim can see in the logs that would explain why when your headphones re-pair with the Ultra the audio is “muted”.
What is the make and model of your headphones ?

No, not yet. First I'm trying to establish if I want something impossible, although this works flawlessly with Squeezelite and my phone. But according to @Wiimer this should be possible with the Ultra as well, so I might need to raise a ticket.
Headphones are B&W PX7-3. More than enough for my hearing.

I have the same issue with a pair of Sennheiser momentum 4.

Disconnecting and reconnecting from within the WiiM Home App Bluetooth menu returns the sound.

I've had the same experience with a pair of Sennheiser Accentums, but also with a pair of cheap earbuds.

Things work fine with the first connection after pairing, but then nothing afterwards. The player thinks sound is going to the headphones, and I can pause/play the "sound" from my headphones, so the connection is two-way, but no sound. Unpairing and re-pairing just restarts the process.

In my case, it is worse because it actually stops sound going to the speakers after I turn the headphones off. The only way to get sound back to the speakers is by changing the input to something else and then back to, in my case, Optical In.

As an aside, I find it frustrating that the Ultra will not allow you to pick between Speaker Out and BT Out when the headphones are connected - it keeps returning to BT Out.

It wasn't related to my WiiM players but I have 3 pair of BT headphones that I use with other devices (PC, laptop, DAP, etc). I was having trouble like yours with my Sennheiser Momentum 4s and my Linux laptop. The other 2 pairs worked fine. I asked Sennheiser and they said it was due to differing versions of Bluetooth drives between the 2 devices. For example one device is version 5.0 and the other is 5.2. Initial connections work fine but auto reconnect is problematic.
