Most I've seen could hardly be described as 'compact'. Something like this is compact in my bookBest to just check the second hand market and look for the port at the back
It's a cheap & effective solution, but like I said: most dvd player show somewhat limited info on the display making it harder to use without a tv.
I feel like we're kind of running in circles here because that's exactly the kind of USB disc drives I was referring to in my original post. Most I've seen could hardly be described as 'compact'. Something like this is compact in my book

Yes you've said so already, but again that's not a solution for those without a dedicated streaming pc, NAS or Raspberry Pi to act as a server (and the whole setup process)Well, I use Lyrion Music Server (LMS) on a win10 mini pc with a usb cd. The cd-play plugin gives full access to the disc. Plays to any connected player/ device (eg. Mini, Wiim pro, etc.).
Just like you, I'm waiting for this feature to become reality. I think it's in the software side to just recognize any USB cd or DVD drive as a Fat32 format thumb drive.Yes you've said so already, but again that's not a solution for those without a dedicated streaming pc, NAS or Raspberry Pi to act as a server (and the whole setup process)
After all, I posted my request specifically in the WiiM Ultra forum - I'm not asking how to stream CD's to a WiiM device.
I'm pretty sure an audio cd has its own type of formatting so it'll probably take a little bit of development, but nothing crazy.Just like you, I'm waiting for this feature to become reality. I think it's in the software side to just recognize any USB cd or DVD drive as a Fat32 format thumb drive.
Don’t know if it’d be a “little bit” depending on expectations - for example, would it suffice for it just to play as one continuous audio stream, or as identifiable tracks you could play, skip, shuffle and repeat? At the end of the day, WiiM devices are streamers not CD players and pushing them to do things such as CD playback diverts development resources away from enhancing their core streaming functionalityI'm pretty sure an audio cd has its own type of formatting so it'll probably take a little bit of development, but nothing crazy.
The skip shuffle routine is exactly how LMS CDplayer works. It also does a remote database lookup for cd title & track info. Can't see Wiim devoting resources to develop this kind of functionality, to be honest.Don’t know if it’d be a “little bit” depending on expectations - for example, would it suffice for it just to play as one continuous audio stream, or as identifiable tracks you could play, skip, shuffle and repeat? I get your point, but I think you could argue the same thing about local playback from storage devices over USB?things such as CD playback diverts development resources away from enhancing their core streaming functionality
Not that big a jump from an SMB shared media library to local drives I’d argue, but a bigger jump to emulate a file system for a device like a CD player that doesn’t natively present as that.I get your point, but I think you could argue the same thing about local playback from storage devices over USB?
There are plenty of compact DVD players available with Toslink port. They will play CDs just fine into your WiiM’s optical input. Sony and other reputable brands make them.
There aren't any currently models with Toslink outputs. Your only hope is something used.Do you have any model numbers/names?

Agreed but the statement made was regarding compact DVD players, not CD players. As far as it being any good as a CD player, it stinks! It might be a great transport though. I don't own one so I have no opinion on it as a transport. The Shanling I posted above has optical, coax and usb outputs.
I’d guess (but am prepared to stand corrected) the former has or uses its internal DAC while the latter doesn’t have a DAC but relies on an external one.So what's the difference between a player and a transport?
