As the title says: it would be nice to add support for CD playback from a simple generic USB CD drive. Additionally a way to rip the audio to any attached storage device would be a cool bonus. Retrieval/displaying of the artwork and metadata of the web even more so.
Speaking of CD or DVD players with digital output, is there any models that can read flac, dsd and iso files? Are those new models from shanling or fiio with this feature?

There's no requirements for cd players to read iso files. An iso is an image file, used to burn onto a cd or dvd (or can be mounted as a virtual disc on your computer). What file structure you'll eventually end up with on the disc after burning depends on what's contained in the iso file itself.
As for flac or dsd: maybe... if the cd player can read regular data CDs. Flac and mp3 are probably more likely.

It's surprising what CD players can read, the one in my car reads mp3s, wav, wmv and flac even though it doesn't advertise anywhere that it can do this.

These days it's pointless as my car stereo will also support streaming from my phone, or indeed from a USB stick, and in recent years, the capacities of both have grown significantly, and I now also have unlimited data so streaming over tidal in the car is my go to. However the car is quite old, and came with a 6 cd changer, which can also read the mp3 wmv, wav and flac files, so at one time, it was a nice feature for long drives.
