Does the remote need the app to function?

As the title says. I'm a new wiim user using spotify through ethernet and have the optical-out of my tv going to the optical-in of my wiim pro plus with optical-in autosensing turned on and it works well.

The issue appears to be that when I turn everything on when i get home I find the volume on the remote doesn't seem to work until I start the app on my phone. Once it's working I can stop the wiim app and it will still work. Is there a delay in the remote working with the wiim or does it need the app to pair with the wiim initially

If you've freshly powered up the WiiM you'll probably find that the remote needs an initial button press, and then a few seconds wait, to re-establish its Bluetooth connection. At least that's been my experience with the Pro.
The WiiM Home app is neither here nor there for normal remote operation. It is of course required to register the remote and configure presets.
