Me too. I’m in the lookout for a small CD player which I can use as a transport (digital out to the Ultra), but it will have to be front, tray loading.

A WiiM front loaded CD transport with LinkPlay module, matching the Ultra's form, would be a great option.
The network connected CD would be able to make metadata look up and share it via the linking to other WiiMs.

Still waiting for a decent CD transport from Wiim, with the same form factor of the Ultra and Vibelink.
I hope for a top loading system, that i have on my Rega, and that i consider the best option because there is not moving parts, so less prone to failure or damages.

I will for sure want a front load. A quality loader will work fine for a long time. My 30 years old Sony is still working fine after being in use all this time.
I'm with you there. About a year ago I sold my Marantx CD45 which my parents bought for me as a birthday present in 1987/1988. Still working abosultely fine. So yes, stick a quality front loading (tray or slot) mechanism into an Ultra-like transport chassis and I'm a happy bunny. I could imagine they might sell a few actually. No idea how many Topping PL drives have been sold, but they obviously thought there was a market.
Quality mech with new CD players is a dream, it won't happen. Most likely just cheap ones like laptops. You're not going to get transports like this anymore, and forget with brands from Wiim.

And now back to what I need in the revised Wiim Ultra (Mark II) streamer. I don't need many more features. Just give me a better quality version of the original, maybe with the AK4497S DAC-chip and HDMI eArc support. Fix all the pop sounds and static noise clicks (really terrible) without all the software modifications you have implemented to try to remedy this like fixed resolutions, fade-in and out effects, sample rate switch latency and reduce noise from optical/HDMI ARC. This software tuning helps, but is far from perfect and makes me jump high and almost die every time a high static noise shoots through my speakers. And maybe update to a faster system prosessor so changing between audio inputs can be a bit faster.

I never hear any of the pop sounds and static noise clicks you describe. What equipment do you have connected to the current WiiM Ultra? Maybe it's because of the external devices you have this issue and the WiiM firmware then allow you to mitigate this?

Interesting. I get this sometimes through all outputs, USB, coax and optical when connected with different external DACs. I bought mine when it was released. Maybe you have a newer and fixed version.

This sounds like issues with the external DACs and not something a future WiiM will be able to solve.

I don't get any pops or static clicks from mine, I am only using the coaxial output, and the only external DAC I have connected it to is the one in my Vibelink.
