Features wanted in a Wiim Ultra 2

How about a WiiM Surround Ultra? Take the signal from the HDMI eARC. Output up to 9.1.

Add a larger, 10 inch, touch screen.

Put better sounding analog outputs.

Two HDMI inputs.

Get rid of the phono input, replace it with a 2ch analog input.

$800 bucks.

There used to be a market for pre-pro in the 800 to 1000 USD range but it looks like it got vacated.

The processors all moved up to Super Duper 13 channel units with all kinds of doo dahs... or the AVRs just got cheap with lots of more doodahs.

I still think that most people never install more than five channels, if at most.

A WiiM Processor that was could drive wirelessly WiiM Sound Surrounds ( a Sound Light with simpler features ) would be a killer product. IMHO.

I have a toneeinner at 300

9.3.4 system

Great, I’m sure. But that’s not an Ultra 2, it’s a completely different product.

I'd be happy with an Ultra with an HDMI output. Same size of the case and display.

What's that mean in terms of a Streamer/DAC?? That it be pre-anointed in Snake-Oil??
Define snake oil in the design of the steamer/dac. What design choices in hardware are sensible and what are not . Why ? What are specifically the metrics needed to be achieved for a steamer to be considered state of the art . What is your informed advice to the audio engineers of Wiim ? Can Wiim ultra sound quality be improved ? If yes , how ? If no , elaborate on why you think so .Do you think you possess such a deep knowledge on the subject that your opinion can carry weight ?

Answer my question first... "What does "audiophile focused" mean (to you) in terms of a Streamer/DAC??"

I don’t know how they will achieve it. I just know there is better sound out there at the level of Wiim price . Audiophile focus = sound quality focus which is different than feature focus . So whatever it takes . Now answer my questions …

Now I also have a question. Which devices are those?
Mxn 10 from Cambridge and nano from Bluesound . Seem surprised to hear that for the first time ? That is my personal opinion after trying these devices on my system and the majority view of people that have compared the sound between those . I am talking as a complete package that is as streaming dacs .

I had the Nano before I got the ultra. While it is fine for what it is it is by no means better than the Ultra.
The Cambridge I don‘t know. But it’s got a lower spec ESS DAC than the Ultra.
Further, none of the two come even close to the spec list of the Ultra.
So what the hell are you smoking?

I'm ambivalent about spending more money on the DAC. IMHO, the biggest difference in most DACs nowadays is the analog output section, which is relatively expensive and most people don't seem to care about it.

So far, I've driven the Nitsch Pietus Maximus, Burson Swing (variety of op amps) and Topping D90LE with my WiiM Ultras. I have a few more others that I want to try.

None of my DACs are particularly expensive but their MSRP is twice, or more, than the Ultra's... so I doubt you will even see such output sections unless the Ultra were to be updated to something around 900 bucks.. or more... and then many people would not buy it.

My experience with the DACs is that they sound a lot better than the one that comes standard in the Ultra... Again, IMHO, it's likely not the DAC proper but the output section. As it now stands, I only use one of the Ultras with its own DAC in the Home Theater... and even so, I'm planning on plugging in a different DAC one of these days because the sound does sound a bit dry with a shallow soundstage and the mass choral voices get harsh quickly. Why? I don't know really, I just hear it.

Perhaps the Ultra could be shipped with socketed opAmps? That might allow for the factory to include a plain version and allow users to spend the money on better output sections...

Also, add a balanced analog output section.

BTW, I have one of these:

Supreme Sound Audio Components
Lycan Op-Amp Test Bench / Headphone Amplifier Preamplifier

When you use it you can clearly hear the differences with op amps.

In my world. a combination of the WiiM Ultra network front end with this

would be the best... I would likely sell some preamps...

I’d like to see them add a coax input and a center out for a dedicated center speaker. It’s already a really good device so adding all of these “audiophile” features would just increase the price and drive away customers. Plus WiiM’s strengths are in their software which kinda blows the competition out of the water.

First priority is the sound quality and everything else follows . Unless the audience is casual listeners which I don’t think it is the case for ultra
