Got Into Vinyl & Kinda Wish I Hadn't

Thanks, it is. Vinyl or digital, have been trying to be more present w/o all the modern distraction actually listening to albums and music. A good way to connect w/my teenage kids, enjoying seeing them appreciate classics and new stuff.

Am I in the minority ? Anyone end up concluding similarly :D, that the vinyl/gear investment could've gone elsewhere (better speakers, sub, whatever)?
I came to this conclusion (for myself) years ago. I like good sounding music, and have in fact been on that quest for a long time, but I’m not picky enough to care about any improved quality of vinyl over digital media. That’s especially true more recently with the absurd cost of decent players. Last year I chose to spend more than usual on a WiiM Amp Ultra, a decent pair of speakers (Paradigm Monitor SE 6000F’s) and a SVS sub, and I couldn’t be happier. What I’d have to spend to add vinyl to this setup can’t nearly be justified by any modest sound improvements that I probably wouldn’t hear anyway. Not to mention the space I’d have to make for it and the record collection somewhere. It’s just not for me.

Yep. That nice warm sound of vinyl is just pure distortion. 'Nice' distortion some will say but not part of the original recorded signal. Room treatment is where it's at now... that's where the money should be spent. Not easy for some but the old hierarchy of source first is dead; room first then source. Source is pretty much sorted now with DACs and file playback, and Amps are now pretty transparent. Speakers still the weakest link. Cables were never a problem.

I can never understand pictures/videos that show decent speakers either side of a television, and a tiny soundbar underneath the tv. emotions11.gif

I had no choice when I grew up, it was vinyl or tape in it various forms. I have no allusions in what I prefer these days and it is neither of those, a hard drive and a house full of music from it is infinitely better from a convenience POV. My first music source was a wind up 78rpm Gramophone and acetate?? records which I sort of miss but I broke the mainspring in it so it went to the tip.

I reluctantly "got into" vinyl when a friend gave me a turntable. I really don't think vinyl sounds better than digital, and I don't want to collect vinyl records. I decided to make the most of it and I bought a cartridge specifically for 78s. I have some of those and it's nice to be able to play them on modern gear (I also have a Philco console radio/phono for 1947 that is working). I might buy more 78s if I can find any that are interesting. Most of the cheap ones at thrift stores are either Bing Crosby records or Polish oom-pah music (I live in Milwaukee). I'd like to find old blues 78s, but they're probably all in the hands of collectors and those that are available probably cost more than I'm willing to pay for the mild and occasional amusement they would provide.

I do have Danny Kay and the Andrews sisters singing Civilization, which my gen Z niece recently informed me was very popular with Gen Z because it's used in the popular Fallout video games. That one is probably worth more than the $1 I paid for it about 20 years ago.

Meanwhile, the TT sits mostly unused, collecting dust...
