Have been using Grado SR80X for a few months now. After getting used to the 'Grado sound' i believe this is my kind of tast. These are quite compact on ear headphones, wich i prefer when listening outdoors. This is true Handcrafted Plastics® made in Brooklyn, USA . Own also other, bigger, more expensive headsets, but this Grado is the most used, not only the sound but also the small form factor.

Wondering of their higher priced models are worth an upgrade, i.e. GW100x, SR225x

I have the Grado GW100X headphones, and really like them. They can be used with or without a cable.
I was wondering how they would compare with the SR80X, SR125X, and SR225X models.

I had the Gw100x long term and also tried the Sr225x for a week, unfortunately not at the same time, I would say that the Sr225x were slightly better all around sound, the same overall sound signature tho, not a huge step up but noticeable.

My Focal Bathys are actually not the best sounding phones I own, but they are by far the best sounding Bluetooth phones I've ever owned. It took a while. At first I didn't care for the sound, but over time either they got broken in or my ears did, and now with the convenience of wireless, I enjoy them immensely. And they sound even better when connected to a source using the included USB-C cable.

Two caveats:
  1. Their noise cancellation is not nearly as good as the leading brands (Apple, Sony, Bose). In fact it's not really that much better than non NC closed back phones. Not great on airplanes at all. That could be a dealbreaker for some.
  2. Their step-up volume is too coarse.

Here's a picture of what I use for headphone listening. I have a WIIM Mini to stream the digital audio off my NAS. Music selection from the NAS is controlled via the WIIM app on an old iPad. The digital music is then converted into analogue format using an SMSL M300SE DAC and headphone amp (small box on the left). The headphones I use are Sennheiser HD600 ones. The whole setup sounds very good to old my ears.

I'm on the El Cheapo side, you know.

Currently mostly using a HD560s driven by a Little Dot MKII, and a Hifiman HE400SE driven by a D30Pro+A30Pro combo.
This old junk still satisfies me a lot. 😄

My latest headphones are a pair of Sennheiser HD 25 Lite, which are connected to the Line Out of one of my WiiM Pro devices via a Twin RCA Phono to 3.5mm Stereo socket cable.

These sound excellent like this, and do not require any fancy headphone amplifier, or other extraneous devices for that matter.

I own Bose QC Ultra's and Sony WF-1000XM4 earbuds. Yep, I know what a lot of folks might be thinking, Bose?
Noise cancelling is the most important thing for me and I've always had Bose. Sony are now pretty close for noise cancelling tho.
My wife watches TV programmes that don't interest me played thru the Ultra and I drop on my bose and chill with music or a YouTube video on my tablet. Both of us are happy.
They are marvellous on a long flight, no listening to crying babies or people jabbering away in a foreign language next to me. I would never fly without them.. 😁

All this foreign language jabbering should be banned on all forms of transport. Only English speakers should be allowed to travel around. And just don't get me started on wailing infants...

(sigh)

That's going a bit far, jabbering is legal in most places, and I'm not a fan of banning things, we have enough of that stuff imposed upon us by the UK government. As long as I have my Ultra's with me, I don't have to listen to it so I'm good. 😂

When I used to fly abroad a lot for work (and for travelling on the much noisier London Underground) I used Etymotic ER6i's which got replaced by Etymotic ER3's.

Both are wired and block out almost all external sound, whilst sounding better than any noise cancelling headphones or earbuds that I've listened to.
