How far are we from a "roon-like" software solution ?

I can imagine Docker would be a major faff but I've never tried faffing with it

Looks a bit complicated, I think you have to SSH/terminal run scripts or something? I guess bit complicated but for me doable I'm used to command line and able to SSH into my NAS, and once it's done never need to do it again. My NAS is realtek so docker doesn't load, but I probably would have learned how to install docker ...but got pi5 instead £100

but yeah not exactly ease of use.

Installing LMS as app within DSM is easy, I guess someone people just so lazy they pay someone to chew the food for them

LMS isn't a major faff at all, especially if you have a NAS that allowed to install onto it. Easy peasy. Central location, boots up ready.

Pi5 is more difficult, but again once picoreplayer is setup (a little bit complicated) going into LMS is easy peasy

Roon is a absolute rip off

Again what counts as faff (even if the question wasn't addressed to you)?

It's all about getting it exactly how I (me, just me) want it.
I can't get Roon and Plex how I want it so they're out.
I can get LMS how I want it but it involves major faffing about with virtual libraries and dynamic playlists just to organise my library how I like it. And to get it to play outside my network..........
It's just my own preferences that cause the faff.

fair enough I don't use virtual libraries or dynamic playlists nor use audio outside of my LAN

WHat do you count as "faffing about"? All software has a learning curve.

Anything that requires more effort than I'm prepared to give to get something to work is how I would describe "faffing about".
As I said, trying to get open source software to work may suit some people, indeed they may well get a sense of achievement having got it to work with no costs to themselves. I have gone down this route many times myself.

My suggestion was meant as an easier alternative to that, albeit with a cost. To some it's worth the cost, to others, it ain't. It's a matter of personal choice I guess.

As I'm 70 years old and retired from the IT game, time is more precious to me now, I prefer to spend my time walking on the moors and along the beach with my wife and 2 dogs and when at home I like to listen to my music rather then spend my time "faffing".

As someone who coded a 100,000 line COBOL program, initial setup of a device like pi/picoreplayer isn't that difficult.

It's not like you need to enter in code everytime it switches on.

For playing outside my network I have OpenVPN on my router. Seems to work OK.
