How you position your set WiiM Ultra with WiiM Vibelink.

Hi, I've bought Ultra few months ago and yesterday bought Vibelink. For now feelings are mixed but main question is how to put them together.
WiiM Vibelink and on top Ultra or reversed. Vibelink is getting warm after 4-5 hour session but nothing dangerous.

How you placed your devices?

Thanks in advance!

I have my Ultra on top of my Vibelink, and have been checking the casing temperature of both, and even after many hours of playing, the Vibelink has only reached around 36 degrees C, and the Ultra a few degrees C less.

Thanks. Tomorrow will take my infrared thermometer and will check. Will feedback tomorrow. Thank you!

VibeLink is a power amp and it will release more heat than Ultra. Ideally I suggest positioning them side by side. If stacked, I would position VibeLink on top to allow its top surface to openly dissipate heat.

Isn’t the vibelink designed to dissipate heat from the bottom? If I recall, I found the top of my vibelink remained cool while the bottom was warmer, but not hot as such. Going by that, I’d stack it under the Ultra.

Even if the heatsink is the bottom, the whole case is heat conducting metal. Heat rises so I would prefer to have its top exposed.

Hi

As @adias said, I chose not to stack Ultra and Vibelink 🙂

However, no matter how they are stacked, I do not guess that this will cause any problems. You can even sandwich insulators between them to create a gap.

Heat rises.

That's a casual saying, but it's not that easy in reality. Somewhat simplified we have two mechanisms at work here:

In the metal case/heatsink: Heat flows through the material by conduction. Very fast and efficient. Free electrons are playing the primary part in heat transfer.

In the ambient air: Heat leaves the surface via convection, where warm air (usually) rises (indeed) and cooler air replaces it. Convection is much slower than conduction.

For both mechanisms: Temperature gradient is king! Heat flows from high to low temperature, no matter the material. So, the temperature distribution imposed by the entire system (ambient and our heat creating device) detirmna the direction of heat flow. That's not necessarily always upwards.

Hi, thanks to all for your answers. Yesterday was a test day. :)
So overall temperature after 6 hours of work were around 40 degrees Celsius (varies between 38.2-39.8), at room temperature around 23-24 degrees. Volume up to 50% max.
I can't decide if this is Ok, but for now I'll leave it stack Vibelink and top Ultra.

About my mixed feelings I migrate from WiiM Amp. At this moment I use Polk Audio R200 as main speakers. They sound nice with WiiM Amp but needed a little more power to be great. Before few months purchased Ultra for main streaming purpose and before that use WiiM Pro which is great little device :). So I've decided to buy a Vibelink considering 40W more power than the AMP. At first can't feel these 40W more, but let's say that is subjective mater. Connected Vibelink and Ultra with optical cable suggested by support. It works fine, and then Vibelink stop responding from app, no going to standby mode. After it turns off app shows him as active etc. Small software bugs which I guess will be corrected by the time.

For the end colors of Ultra and Vibelink isn't the same. Vibelink is more dark than the Ultra. Vibelink color match 100% with WiiM Amp but not the Ultra.

I still considering to return it or keep it.

Thanks!

Sounds totally OK to me. Some of the cheaper chip amps run at similar temperatures when just sitting idle, doing nothing.

Don't expect the WiiM Ultra and Vibelink Amp combo to play louder than the WiiM Amp at a low volume setting. More power is not the same as more gain. Also, just because amplifier XYZ plays very loud with just a small turn of the volume knob doesn't mean it has so much more power in reserve. In such cases you have just a badly chosen gain structure or a badly designed amp.

Also, more wattage doesn't mean more control or more bass at low levels. If the extra power isn't needed, it simply doesn't make a difference. Having said that, I am absolutely convinced that the Ultra + Vibelink Amp are simply more capable than the original WiiM Amp or even the WiiM Amp Pro. The extra power will be there when it's needed. To me, they actually sound more confident and mature.

Are you using a trigger cable between the Ultra and the Vibelink Amp?

Yes, you are absolutely right. That's why thinking of keep it. :)
Still not bought trigger cable. Will take from office next week and connect it for the test.

An extremely cheap 3.5mm to 3.5mm stereo lead should do.
I got one from a large hardware chain store for about A$3
Probably sounds really bad if used for its intended purpose ;)
