Issues with Ultra DLNA

I use the JRiver Media Center player to stream via DLNA to the WiiM. I've been having loads of troubles with the player hanging or crashing for weeks now and since JRiver runs on all platforms, I've tested it on Mac, Windows, and Linux and only the Mac version has the issue.

I am not sure but I think the problem occurs when the WiiM times out. The JRiver software becomes unresponsive or sometimes plays to the WiiM (I can see the VU meter dancing) but the amp isn't on (trigger isn't firing). Yesterday this happened and nothing short of rebooting the WiiM would fix it. However, in the past, if I used another software, like Roon or the Tidal APP, the Wiim would turn the amp on so I went into the Tidal amp and chose the WiiM Tidal Connect and got the error in the screenshot below. After the error, however, Tidal worked fine and the amp turned on. I restarted JRiver and it was working again

I showed it to JRiver tech support and got the following:

It's a WiiM issue. The player isn't sending the SSDP BYE-BYE command when it powers down.
You can see what it's supposed to do if you have another MC running that has DLNA rendering enabled (the default).
When you close that MC, on the one on your primary machine, the tree entry will go away. That's the reason for the hesitation on closing MC, it's sending bye-byes to all of the DLNA devices on the network.

I'm not so sure......Apple Sequoia has known issues with external drives and I have my music on a NAS. Tidal doesn't use DLNA nor does Roon and other Apps I have use chromecast or Airplay. There is another person who left me a comment on the JRiver troubleshooting section that he has a similar setup as me with the same Mac and a NAS server plus sequoia. He has no troubles but doesn't have a WiiM.

I found that the Mac App Emby (which I use for video) can stream audio to DLNA so I am testing it now to see if it acts similar to JRiver by streaming to the WiiM via DLNA.

FYI - I have four Macs and one was an older Intel iMac. The other three are M1 M2 and M3 Apple silicon and all had the JRiver hang issue. Tech support at JRiver can't narrow down the problem with a hang as the Apple crash report is of no use with a hang. He has given me various builds with error trapping but we haven't found the issue yet.

Interesting is if I run the JRiver software on a Windows PC as a server with the Mac Jriver running as a client, the Windows JRiver software is OK but the Mac client will hang.

Any help will be appreciated...I'm dead in the water. I sent my back and forth thread from the JRiver forum to WiiM tech support and they acknowledged it but no response yet.

Post your WiiM ticket number here and ask @RyanWithWiim to escalate it on your behalf
it is #518402 @RyanWithWiim

I want to add that as I said in the post above I was testing EMBY a player other than JRiver that can use the WiiM with DLNA. And after almost a day of testing, Emby has no issues with DLNA.

So far I have had no issues with players that don't use DLNA (Roon, Plex, Amazon Music, Tidal) And I haven't had issues with JRiver on platforms other than Mac (Windows, Raspberry PI).

Didn't JRiver on the Mac exhibit the same behaviour when playing to RoPieee? Maybe try Volumio.

The email you got in return when you sent feedback to WiiM from the WiiM app. You should be able to see all your tickets here - log in using the email address you used when you submitted the ticket

I updated Mac Sequoia to 15.2 and so far everything is working as its supposed to. No crashes or hangs and JRiver woke up the WiiM several times. The test is tonight - an overnight trial. Before it always hung at night.

Fingers crossed it was a MAC OS issue all along.

Afternoon, everybody,

I am new to this, and I have struggled for a number of months to get things right with WiiM Ultra to work correctly with JRiver Media Centre, and I have the same issues with Media Monkey.

Does anybody have a simple guide for me on the best way to set up WiiM Ultra to work correctly with JRiver?

Every time I set it up, it loses the settings. I understand it may be me, so I'll take any stick from anybody if I'm not doing this right.

But truly some help would be great here to resolve this, as when I right-click on any album, by using the 'send to', it just shows the burner and nothing else, and I know it's not talking to the internet because I need to set up the router for port forwarding, he thinks.

Again, thanks for any help.

Can also try Zoneswitch to tell MC to only play Audio to that Zone:

What issues are you having with MediaMonkey. I fired it up on my PC (haven’t used it for ages), and all my WiiM devices show up as speakers/players there. I don’t recall having to do anything for that to happen.
I also noted that since if have media sharing turned on tools/options I can see my MediaMonkey Library under Home Music Share in tow WiiM app.

You can either have JRiver to send to the Ultra or have the Ultra draw files from Jriver. Which are you trying to do.

To have JRiver send to the Ultra just select the Ultra in Playing Now, select your tracks and play. That should work without any issue.

If you want to have the Ultra pull from JRiver you need to draw from a DLNA server on JRiver. You need to have Media Network enabled to do that. Then, from the Ultra you should see the default JRiver DLNA server and connect to that. You also should open port 52199 on your router, although that is only necessary if the Ultra and JRiver are on different networks. You do not need to use your Access Key for DLNA access.

Some more information about what you are trying to do and your network setup would help.

MM is very similar so I’m struggling to see what the issue is

If you do not see the Ultra as a DLNA device in JRiver on Windows you may have to set up Defender with the proper exclusions. Instructions are on their forum.
