Let's talk movies & streaming shows

I appreciate that not everyone has multiple streaming subscriptions but I would recommend

Apple TV

Slow Horses
Masters of the Air
Your Friends & Neighbors

Disney

Shogun

Netflix

The Last Kingdom

Prime

Fargo (Season 4 was disappointing though)

I haven’t seen the adaptions. The French one was shown in Norway. A Japanese version could be interesting. Different cultures and all that.

Nothing wrong with MASH. I prefer the film though.

Talking about films I got some great laughs from finally seeing Jojo Rabbit this summer.
Now that you mentioned Jo-Jo Rabbit....

Black Doves - Netflix. For some unfathomable reason, the drama takes place at Christmas time.

This is in fact the only decent aspect of this series, the final episode has a soundtrack of well-loved carols & a brief appearance of a nice horse. The ending soundtrack is The Pogues 'Christmas in New York.

Otherwise, the story, the acting, etc. is utter rubbish.

I enjoyed it - thought it was quirky and funny. If you want to talk rubbish, what about the endless series of trashy Harlan Coben shows on Netflix? Like poor ITV productions with more money to spend…

Just perpetuates a quirky 'idolised' image of metropolitan London aimed I assume at the US market with the cliche Yellow Peril meme of China as the great enemy. And when was London covered in pristine white snow at Christmas? Even grey slush is a Christmas rarity these days.

I wiil say it's in the running to compete with Apples mindless Sci-fi epic Invasion. Please let the Aliens win & wipe out the streaming TV industry.

We thought it was good too. Entertaining, amusing, with funny twists, good actors and ideas. I think when you watch something like this, you know you're not being presented with real life.

I thought The Assasin with Keeley Hawes who I’ve liked since she was in Spooks (now there was a good series) was going to be like Black Doves but it paled in comparison. Talking of Spooks, I liked Berlin Station although if I recall it dipped in the final season.

My expectations of rhe espionage genre have likely been determined by the likes of Graham Greene & le Carrie. Pastiches are difficult to achieve successfully.

I would also recommend “Davos 1917” here. An spionage film set against the backdrop of the First World War. Netflix

Monster - Prime. Very powerful & moving real-life drama about life as as a prostitute, starring Charlize Thuron as Aileen Wuornos, executed after 12 years on death row. Won an Academy award. Some great songs (including Blondie, INXS). Not an easy watch but worthwhile.

It was a heavy film for me, but a great one. I like Charlize Theron's attitude as an actor; Christina Ricci's performance is also excellent.

A few weeks ago we saw a Polish Harlan Coben film adaptation, 6 parts, 'The Woods'. We couldn't stop it because we thought it had to go off the rails soon...it didn't. Boring garbage 😬

Harlen Coben is very popular. I've no idea why... I have the same reaction as you to all his productions.
