Local Media Streaming, trying to find the best experience...

Yes. I forgot, do I need to select Plex in my Media Services list?
You don't need to configure Plex in the WiiM app in order to use Symfonium, but the fact the Ultra is discovered means mDNS is working.
Are other apps able to detect Chromecast - assuming it's enabled? To test UPnP discovery you could try BubbleUPnP.

As much as I hate to suggest it, have you tried rebooting the Ultra?

I have rebooted, I do so from a wall switch that feeds my power conditioner strip that powers on the ultra, cd transport and my app all at the same time. Probably not the best way but it works for now. Still, I'm thinking what I go to choose media playback on my system tray of my Galaxy S22 phone with the Symfonium app I should see the WiiM Ultra in this list, I think I did several weeks ago when I first tried Symfonium.

What devices are listed when you click the cast icon from within the app?

EDIT: It appears that only Chromecast targets are displayed from the notification shade, and they're only available for selection when you're playing to the local device.

I'm away from my system now, but I opened a support topic with Symfonium and their response was "You need to use the cast button inside Symfonium to cast to UPnP." I will see where that's at and try this evening and post back.

Thank you.

Maybe the notification shade targets are handled by Android, which doesn't natively support UPnP.

Figured it out, user error. I went into settings awhile back and the share icon on the now playing was removed. I just reset back to defaults and not it works as it did. Thanks.

I have LMS and Plex and the Plexamp app is so good I would recommend Plex
He's already using Plex, just with a better control point :)

Plex is fine, but if you're the type of person that cares about the metadata Lightweight Music Server is much better. Plex doesn't even handle multi-value artist or albumartist tags let alone discsubtitles (for box sets), release types (available with Plex Pass I believe) musicbrainz artist ids e.t.c.

I tried LMS in a previous computer build, might need to give it a whirl again based on @simbun recommendations.

Thank you.

I have a Western Digital MyCloud home where I store files for WIIM and Plex. I keep it synced with my Mac files. Works fine.
(My Mac is a laptop that might be turned on once every 2 weeks)

The one caveat I will make is that it's not currently possible for LMS to perform the ReplayGain processing; this can be applied by Symfonium - along with cross-fades etc - but I don't like that as a solution.
I have raised it, but rarely need it so haven't chased it up.

LMS can do Replay Gain but you are not referring to Lyrion are you? Can we from hereon refer to Lightweight Music Server as something other than LMS to avoid confusion. Lyrion Music Server in its various LMS forms has been around a lot longer than Lightweight Music Server!

I'm unsure what ReplayGain processing does and will need to look this up.

I tried "Lyrion" in a previous PC build due to my Logitech Squeezbox appliances needed it after Logitech servers were retired. So @simbun you are talking Lightweight Music Server as being better than Plex Media Server correct? I'm mainly using PMS because it's a simple one-stop shop for me since I also host video files which I connect via the Plex app on my amazon firestick.

What I would like to do is the following:

1. Use the best and reliable "free" music server that supports all formats.
2. Find a program/service/etc. that can automatically rename my music folders into a more standard naming convention (folders and tracks). Many of my album folders and track names have superfluous and special characters.
3. Find a program/service/etc. that can automatically download .lrc files for each track.

Thank you.

Does PlexAmp jive natively with the WiiM Ultra? Will it run on android and/or IOS? Have you compared it to Symfonium using Plex Media Server?

Thank you.

I did refer to it in its full form a couple of posts prior, so I think subsequent abbreviation is fine.

It's basically volume levelling across tracks; of most use if you're shuffling tracks across albums.

I said it has much better metadata support, but that's only relevant if you have the necessary tags - although who doesn't have multi-value artist tags!

PlexAmp is available on both iOS and Android but only supports Chromecast (and airplay on iOS). On the WiiM roadmap there is native PlexAmp support (as an interface on the WiiM) at which point you won't have to rely on Chromecast, but this will likely require a Plex Pass

Yes you did but earlier I think others have used it in reference to Lyrion (which is what I will use going forward).

@motleypixel PlexAmp on iOS or Android can play to / cast to WiiM Chromecast devices. No gapless. No syncing. The WiiM integration of Plex in the app remains ….. a bit iffy …. but it will do gapless etc

I find volume levelling in some products impacts quality of sound. (Yes Roon I am looking at you.) Does Wiim's gain levelling work well? (Yes I can just try I but what fun is that?)

As far as I know volume levelling is only available when playback is controlled by the WiiM Home app (at least it is for DLNA), which I don't use. I did try it with MinimServer but it introduced audible artifacts across track transitions.
