When connecting to my NAS drive, the Wiim home app is asking if I want to "Build an enhanced music library".

Does anyone know if I select "Build", will any changes be made to my music files or data stored on my NAS?

Thank you!

Assuming it's pulling from a media server it can't make any changes.
Depending on the capabilities of your server the negatives do generally far outweigh the positives (grid view, additional sort options in album view and A-Z jumpbar), but it can't hurt so give it a go!

Is there "enhanced music library" support for SMB shares? I never tried it.

The index database had to go somewhere then ... but no existing files will be changed.

In "Advanced" mode they're using the metadata of the remote media server, something that doesn't exist for SMB shares.

I would have thought the database was on the phone, but given the app doesn't need to be running (during the indexing), maybe it's on the WiiM device. App storage (before and after) should give a good indication.

I'm using Minimserver on the NAE if that info helps.

Simbun - you said negatives outweight the positives. Not sure if you meant that in reverse or not, but just for clarification, do you think selecting "build" is worth doing or not?

Thanks again!

I did mean that the negatives outweigh the positives.

The only benefits are:
  • Grid view
  • Album sort options (Title, Artist, Year, Artist+Year)
  • A-Z jumpbar
All of which should be available in "Legacy" mode.

If I'm being generous (ignoring the complexity and incompatibilities it introduces), "Advanced" mode is really just a skin on top of third-party media servers to make them look like the native WiiM solution (USB Input) - I guess WiiM were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should :-)

The problem is that "Advanced" mode only offers Album, Artist (All artists!) and Genre indexes (in addition to track, folder and playlist listings) so you're potentially (depending on what server is being used) missing out on a lot of functionality e.g. Boxset tagging, AlbumArtist/Recently Added|Played/ReleaseType/Series/Release year|decade indexes e.t.c.
