Hi Smarts

Simple question - your thoughts on 100% volume control versus WiiM control? I prefer to control via the app but find it hard to play it LOUD and devialet’s volume control is sorta kludge.
What do you folks prefer?
As always - my thanks

I don't fully understand what you are trying to say here?

my way seems to be a more old-fashioned one. fixed output on the ultra, volume with the (non wiim) integrated amp. most of the time with the amp's remote because i am lazy, sometimes with the knob.
Same here. I have a fixed output on the Ultra connected to an input on the Pioneer control amp and change volume with the Pioneer remote.

Why is it hard to play it loud? Maximum volume will be the same whether volume is fixed at 100% or not. If it isn't loud enough increase the volume of the Devialet.

I tend to use the WiiM or LMS app volume control since I can use a phone, iPad or even a watch to control tracks and volume. My only slight concern is that this involves continually having the amp turned up much higher than it would be if it were being fed a 100% signal from the WiiM, which could just affect longevity even when silent.

Just set the amp volume to the maximum level you want to listen at with the WiiM/LMS volume set to 100% then control the volume from LMS/WiiM.

Jumping between ROON and devialet is somewhat a bore as devialet does a full app refresh every time. BUT I’ve decided - based on 👆- to go with fixed for now and let’s see how it works.

Cheers all. ❤️

That's the first time you've mentioned Roon. LMS is possibly a better fit as you wouldn't need to touch the Devialet volume at all.

My use of ROON is minimal these days. While it’s in the mix it is not the driver behind my (not a) poll. Thanks for the LMS tip. My house is (after 45 years in IT!!!) computer free so running LMS … mind you might be an idea to fire up Nelly and play with LMS… need to learn it first. 😎
Cheers mate!

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure all your amp "cares" about is how loud it's actually playing -- output wattage is directly tied to the SPL of sound being produced by your speakers. In other words, having your amp's volume at 100 but nothing playing is the same (from the amp's POV) as having its volume knob set to zero. I don't think doing it the way you currently are should have any affect on the amp's longevity (consider also the fact that many power amps don't even have a volume control -- their volume is at "100" all the time by default, and volume is controlled entirely at the preamp stage.)

Mine goes into a av pre amp, so the Wiim stays at 100%

Using a miniDSP for external room correction (DIRAC Live); due to the way that volume control is utilized to prevent clipping on it, I can never max out the digital volume on the miniDSP. As a result, I fix volume to max on the WiiM Ultra to ensure (as close as possible to) bit perfect output, and let any actual DSP adjustments occur solely in the one place (miniDSP), which also acts as preamp.
