Plex Endpoint Support / Plexamp Headless

I just had a little conversation with the Plex-Support, asking about the state of plex endpoint integration. As of their last roadmap Plex Endpoint/Plexamp Headless support is listed under "actively working on".
According to the support they are still evaluating it and are in fact not actively working on it. I really would like to see headless plexamp on the wiim ultra, because the current implementation is really flawed.
For example: Under artist pages there are only albums shown, no eps or live-albums or compilations.
Also preset-playlists only contain the first 500 tracks...
From my understanding it should be easier to implement a true plex endpoint, than trying to implement all the functions "manually" and bit by bit within the wiim home app.
I guess there are a few others that would like to see this feature, since also chromecast with plexamp is really in dire need of an update, since it doesnt even show track, or artist names not even talking about album art. But from my understanding that is something the Plex/Plexamp team would need to fix/implement.

All that aside, I am still really happy with the plex support so far, and all the improvements that have been made so far.
All the best to all of you,
Navid

Yup I have all the prerequisites and had it working with Music Assistant 2.7.x

I followed every update, as recommended, but I'm running in the issue described above.

It does work if I assign the Plex Connect plugin to one of my Google Home speakers instead of the WiiM.

Hey @music8148 just got the new 2.8.3 update of Music Assistant and i reset all the settings to the default, but still no luck getting the Plexamp connect plugin to work again with my WiiM Ultra. The new settings actually seem a bit more logical, but seems like something's changed underneath...

There are many updates these days, including today's.

Music Assistant 2.8.3 - 10.04.2026.
I'll try to show you some configurations:

In Music Assistant - Settings - Players: you must have added the Wii U, which must be configured as follows by checking the following settings (those not mentioned should not be selected, i.e., left blank):

Unmask this player...

M Speaker

DLNA

Enable Chromecast

Enable Sendspin

Enable DLNA support

Enable Smart Stories: disabled

Default volume increase 85 15 75

General controls: none, none, none

In Music Assistant - Plugins: there must be one "Plex Connect Plugin" for each speaker you have, and definitely one for the Wii U Ultra.

Here's how to configure the Plex plugin:

Plex Music Provider: Plex Media Server Library

Music Assistant Player: WiiM Ultra c 124

Plex Player Name: WiiM Ultra

Device Class: Default Speaker

In Music Assistant --- Music source: "Plex Media Server Library" must be configured as follows:

Local Server IP: The local server address where your Plex Media Server is located (for example: 192.168.1...), Local Server Port: The port you find using the automatic settings Music Assistant offers to integrate Plex, SSL: Empty, these are set automatically using the automatic functions; Library also configures itself.

Okay, let me know if these instructions help you... regards

Nah... still the same :( music starts playing for 2 seconds on the WiiM, then Plexamp disconnects and I get the error message. Thanks for the help though!Screenshot 2026-04-11 at 20.49.44.png

There's something wrong with the Home Assistant or Music Assistant settings.
By the way, I should add that with this system, it's possible to add AirPlay for Apple. The only drawback is that it's not gapless.

In Music Assistant--Settings--Music Sources you must have Music Assistant and Plex Media Server (also Apple if anyone has Apple)

In Music Assistant--Settings--Player Provider you must have DLNA, Chromecast, Sendspin, Airplay, etc. (I don't know if this makes a difference but it's better to have them)

Also, have you added Integrations in Settings > Devices & Services? In the lower half of the page, you need to add all the items: DNLA Digital Media Renderer, DNLA Digital Media Server, Music Assistant, Link Play for Ultra, etc., each with its own entities... add from the page above to the part below

These are integrations in Home Assistant itself right? Not Music Assistant? They should not matter as MA works totally independently. It can be run from a docker container as well. + I don't have a DLNA server in my network even.

From a clean install of MusicAssistant all that's needed is:
  • Settings > Music Sources > Plex Media Server Library
  • Settings > Player Providers > DLNA (preinstalled)
  • Settings > Plugins > Plex Connect Plugin (one per speaker/streamer)
After configuring my Plex server and WiiM Pro in the aforementioned plugins I was able to cast to "WiiM Pro via MA" (the name I gave it in the Plex Connect Plugin) from PlexAmp and playback was gapless.

The Now Playing screen in MA showed the track being sent from Plex to my WiiM Pro using DLNA.

EDIT: I'm not able to play from the Plex web interface, and the playback controls within PlexAmp are limited (can't pause/stop), though I guess that's to be expected given both are currently in Alpha.

Yupppp, going through the process of doing a complete reinstallation of HA + MA at the moment. Thanks! Fingers crossed 🤞

Play/pause used to work for me actually!

I wish WiiM and Plex would just give us a native Plexamp endpoint for Wiim.
Me too, don't know why the delay but it maybe they can't agree on the money? Plex pretty much doubled their subscribers fees last year so maybe they want more cash than Wiim wants to pay?
I'm just speculating and may be entirely wrong but Wiim aren't forthcoming on what's holding things up.

Plex is a very mediocre music server; more style than substance. I think Plex needs WiiM more then WiiM needs Plex.
You also need a Plex Pass to play to a PlexAmp endpoint so it could be a revenue stream for Plex.

Based on demand for PlexAmp here lots of people seem to love it. I guess you like what you are used to 😂

2 things.

1. IMHO Plex is pretty good and if I had to choose something other than Lyrion I’d consider it for use with WiiM as it stands.

2. You only need a Plex Pass if you want to run PlexAmp on a Pi. The relevant app will work without on an iOS , Android or indeed Windows PC. I haven’t tried Mac but pretty sure that’s the same.

Interesting observation, in what way would you consider Plex mediocre?
It simple to set up and works as it is supposed to, (unless one of Wiim's firmwear updates breaks it). 😁
Aesthetically it looks reasonable, it works anywhere in the world and on Android Auto.
I can agree that the cost of the lifetime pass is now expensive but as I got mine on one of their excellent promotions quite a while back it was a no brainer.

As I've spent a large part of my life in IT, setting up open source software wouldn't be a problem for me but as I'm now 70 years old and my time is now precious, the simplicity of Plex appeals to me for such a small sum of money.

It's not for everyone but in my case it makes sense.

You'd choose to use PlexAmp and Chromecast or Plex in WHA (which basically just gives you albumartist, album and recently added indexes)? Even if I was limited to media servers (not specialist music servers) I'd choose KODI or Emby over those options.

2. You only need a Plex Pass if you want to run PlexAmp on a Pi.
Isn't that what I said?
You also need a Plex Pass to play to a PlexAmp endpoint
Though I believe it's any PlexAmp endpoint not just a Pi e.g. Lumin, Audiolab 9000N, WiiM?

There are many more using MiniDLNA than Lyrion, that doesn't make it better :)

I wonder how many people chose Plex for music, rather than just because they're already using it for video.

I was already using Plex locally for video, then paid for the lifetime Plexpass to be able to use Plexamp (before there was the free version).
