Question about Airplay support for WiiM Ultra by WiiM mini

If that's the path you specified in MinimServer then your images will go in: /volumes/lacie/MusicLibrary/indexArtwork/
I’m over here ripping all of these CDs and just realized I can only use this server home. What’s a good way to access these albums when I’m not home.

You’d need to look at server software that allowed that - maybe something like Plex or Roon I guess.

Wasn’t sure about that, thx
LMS via a VPN will work but really only advisable if you have a WiFi connection rather than Mobile data. 3G/4G doesn't really cut it.

My current solution is as follows:

Server 1 - LMS with NAS/files. Tailscale VPN. I will use this when I have decent WiFi.
Server 2 - Plex using the same NAS/files. Plex is configured to allow remote access.

PlexAmp on my phone.
PlexAmp supports Apple CarPlay and has very aggressive caching which makes it work over 3G/4G even in relatively poor signal areas. It converts to an Opus stream on the fly. It auto resumes when I start the car. I just leave it on a 70s Radio mix. The "Sweet Fades" make it a really nice listen for in car use. PlexPass NOT needed.

Thank you for this suggestion. I think I’m liking Plex more than minimsever so far. Especially as an interface. Can you think of a reason why I should choose minimserver over plex ?

Keeping it simple, MinimServer has two audiences:
  • Those with minimal requirements who want a rock solid lightweight server (the free version)
  • Those who want more control over the indexing and browse process (the licensed version).
Plex has much more functionality and a more modern interface.

Plex also allows Remote Access and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto via PlexAmp app

Put them on your mobile phone.
Another option (especially for iPhone users with limited storage) is to upload your rips to the cloud and then use apps like the venerable Cloudbeats to stream or download in full quality to your phone as and when you wish. You can also AirPlay/Bluetooth tracks from there to any other supported device when out and about.

How do I keep my server connected for remote access - once my computer goes to sleep when I leave home for the day won’t my server lose an internet connection ?

This is a reason why people use "always on" Raspberry Pis as servers.

My Plex server runs on an always on Linux VM. The physical server hosts a number of things which are irrelevant here.

Have you considered a NAS to centralise your music? Decent NAS can run Plex, Minimserver etc natively. You can run both against the same files simultaneously.
By decent NAS I probably mean Synology or QNAP as they are best supported.

Alternatively a Raspberry Pi with attached USB as @slartibartfast says is a good option for an always on music server.

You didn't mean to quote me did you 🤔

Of course it's possible to connect an WiiM Mini or another Airplay 2 device (AirPort Express, Belkin Sound connect, ...) to the WiiM Ultra. But this needs a physical connection and the Optical-In is blocked.

My question is, if it is possible to place the WiiM Mini anywhere in the local network and create something like a group including the WiiM Ultra and Mini.

Perhaps the WiiM Ultra can receive signals from other group members? In this case the signals from the WiiM Mini, received by Airplay 2. If this would be possible, the the missing Airplay support of the WiiM Ultra would be no problem.
It's important to note that although it works to select a device like the Mini or Pro/Plus first and then add the Ultra to form a group that includes the Airplay 2 source in all units, they will only transmit 16/44.1 despite Airplay 2's ability to transmit 24/48. Don't know why but it's the party line from Wiim as of Nov. 2024. https://faq.wiimhome.com/en/support...epth-sample-rate-your-music-service-supports-

I’d dispute that it’s WiiM’s party line - see https://audiophilestyle.com/ca/bits-and-bytes/apple-music-lossless-mess-part-2-airplay-r1026/
