Spotify Spotify Lossless is here, it's official!

Italy is happy with Spotify lossless. Today is that day. :-)
Just tested some 24bit / 44.1kHz tracks on WiiM Ultra and Cambridge Audio MXN10 with no issues - just cleared the cache as advised - to validate it works. Analytical listening to come later.

I've just tried on my Wiim Mini.
Of course, it is faaaar superior to OGG but compared with Qobuz, I really can hear the difference between a 16 and 24 bit encoded track. Doesn't mean it's bad, it means that it doesn't sound as warm as Qobuz or even Tidal.
Voices, bass, or all instruments are getting more details and more space with Qobuz.

Kinda disappointed. I'll stick with Qobuz, and keep Spotify for podcasts and audiobooks.

Lossess on Spotify is ok in France.
First try with a album of King Hannah, a message told me sorry lossless is not available for this content.
Picking other artists and albums, 16/44 for most of them.
No find 24 bits material so far.

Qobuz still m'y first choice for music.

@wimmer posted to say there’s a “Spotify Lossless 24-bit” playlist

I had just listening this, not so bad.
I would use only one streaming provider and Qobuz for so many criterias is m'y first choice.

But before i'll quit Spotify, i'll have to find a good Podcast reader and manage with my teenagers.
For them and their friends Spotify is the only one.

First feedback on devices... I'd have not guessed that, but after one year on Qobuz and one month with Qobuz Connect, find the Spotify Connect little bit a pain. On my devices, I can use Lossless only on WiiM and CA, while all Google/Nest devices are limited to 320 Ogg, disappointing as Google Cast can go above. Find more informative and convenient the Qobuz way of handling capabilities, while Spotify is hiding almost all details until you try to use something not supported.
Content wise I'm pleased that once I setup Lossless I could find anything I was searching from my library in 16bit FLAC, assumed less coverage at "day 1".

Quality will need some time, weekend I'm looking to you ;)

You can hear a difference between a 16 and 24 bit recording? Impressive. I’d love to see a blind test though.

First impressions doing 1h listening on Spotify Lossless vs 1h listening on Qobuz Connect. Different songs from a large varied playlist, just the overall feeling of the sound. I checked multiple times to have no EQ settings in any client, nor volume normalization, and let both go.
Findings:
* Overall, no mayor difference as you would expect. I did not checked if I was hearing 24bit or 16bit, nor the sampling rate, focusing on the experience.
* Feels like I'm hearing a more low-medium presence in Spotify, vs Qobuz. It kind of reminds me of how I perceived Tidal when comparing to Qobuz.
* Qobuz feels more detailed, with better separation, if you put attention. Spotify seems to "Glue" together the sound, but not as much as a digital artifact. I was initially assuming I left on normalization or some EQ... but I was not

Additional:
* Few songs are available in 24bit on Qobuz that are not found in Spotify (yet?)
* Found no song rendered still in Ogg from Spotify, I was ready for some and was a positive finding

My setup (Home Office):
* WiiM Ultra + Vibelink Amp (optical) + Acoustic Energy 501
* Tested at volume = 30, Vibelink Amp volume full scale up

I'll keep switching here and there among the two, I have 4 months before Qobuz subscription ends. Dropping it may not be so crazy, if you are not into esoteric gear.

Interesting findings. I'm in a bit of a dilemma myself. I'm not a fan of spotify (for all the ethical reasons already discussed) and would rather not use it. However my family refuse to move away from it, which leaves me still paying for a family premium account regardless. I started using qobuz as an alternative a year ago, and now my sublime subscription is due for renewal next week. I can't really justify paying for 2 subscription services which are now offering a comparable quality of music (though if qobuz offered a pay by the month payment option for sublime I'd be more inclined). I'd still like to make an ethical choice (at least one I feel ok about), so am leaning towards dropping qobuz but continuing to regularly buy albums (either cd or digital) to support artists.
Anyone else in a similar boat?

I don't quite see what your problem is, just tell your family that you are cancelling your Spotify family premium account, and if they don't like it, they can pay for it themselves.

I am. Family Spotify not negotiable, Qobuz so far for streaming on my gears. If buying from key artists I love, I still go physical for the sake of ownership of a "thing" vs digital. After one year of Qobuz - only usage, the Spotify app (Win e Android) feels chunky, confusionary, overloaded and not clear on the streaming quality - just the fact that identified "Lossless" for both 16bit and 24bit vs Qobuz that clearly says CD or HiRes (silver) or HiRes (gold) is annoying to me :) - but it's rock solid and just works. Everywhere. Hard to justify the few songs I listen to in 24bit / 48kHz+ for a subscription, can easily buy the same if ever feels the need and still save money.

It's not a matter of who pays for it. It's that *someone* in the family does it, so it's available. Feels dumb to pay twice, if there is not enough value in doing so.

It certainly is, when the bill payer would rather not use it. Let the freeloading family members that want to use it pay for it.

This plus spotify would still be getting our $$$, which negates the ethical reasons for ditching it.
