Ultra with Linn DSM

I have recently added the Ultra into my main audio system and it’s made a really big improvement. After comparing digital and analogue connections, I have the ultra connected to my Linn Majik DSi (DSM) via (Origin Live) analogue interconnects.
The Ultra is set to fixed volume and the Linn does the volume adjustment. I was able to change the volume setting in the Linn so that it does not Digitise the input.
The music is a real step up compared with streaming directly from the Linn DSi (which in itself is very good). I guess the DACs have improved massively over the 15 years between their respective designs.
I have also tried the Ultra directly connected to my power amp, but found this inferior to the setup I have now. I think it is likely to do with using the digital volume within the Ultra.

I used the external dac to go into XLR into my Amp which sounds way better than going into the RCS of my AMP

I’ve been using WiiM devices since the Mini connected over digital into my Linn MDSM/4 and M109s initially for Amazon Music support and it’s been great - I guess you must have an earlier DSM as I don’’t have the option to not digitise analogue input but I doubt I’d notice the difference.

I recently found that some Linn dealers (although not some Linn staff..) are quite “sniffy” and deprecate the use of WiiM streamers despite the fact that Linn’s software development in terms of streaming services seems to be at a snail’s pace, if not halted - still no Amazon Music support and no sign of Qobuz Connect support either for example. It’s a pity..

But beside Amazon Music, Qobuz Connect and the need to contact and pay sniffy or snobby dealers...the gear looks, feels and sounds quite nice. Agreed? 😉

Hello could you possibly tell me exactly the settings as I have a Linn Majik DSM - 2015 - and just bought the Wiim Ultra - actually I was sold the Amp Ultra which is a mistake but I still want to have the same set up as you when I exchange to the Ultra. thanks MikeBB

Out of interest, what is the DAC in the Linn Majik DSM.

I’ve got the Linn Selekt DSM Edition with two Stereo Power Out Cartridges with two Organik DACs.

My system is in storage at the moment as we have relocated from the UK to Poland and temporarily using Amazon Echos at the moment.

Music source is Jazz, either from Qobuz or Jazz24 Radio.

However, once we have moved into our new house, I plan to get the Wiim Amp Ultra for our second system, just got to decide which bookshelf speakers to get for it.

From memory the Linn MDSMs use an AKM4493, similar to the AKM4493SEQused in the WiiM Pro Plus. I used an WiiM Ultra over usb into my MDSM/4.

One thing (amongst others) about the Selekt in relation Qobuz is that it doesn't yet support Qobuz Connect and Linn don't seem to have any intention or rush about providing it. Maybe a good reason to consider a WiiM to feed it...

Thanks for the prompt response.

I very much like the one box system, previously had a ten box Linn / Naim system previously, so enjoy the cleanliness of it.

Hence looking to get the Wiim Amp Ultra for the second system retaining the one box approach.

So far using the Linn App and Qobuz App, where necessary, has worked for me and thus haven’t used Qobuz Connect.

I will try it when I get the Wiim Amp Ultra to see what it is all about.
