Using RCA socket and Optical at same time

Hi I have a Wiim Pro Plus which is connected to my analogue stereo integrated amplifier. I'm using the RCA sockets (analogue interconnect) for music. I use my iPhone to select music via the Spotify app.

I am thinking of buying a TV and installing it above my stereo.

Can I connect the TV to the WiiM through the Optical In?

How would I choose to play music through my phone via Spotify and choose to have the sound of the TV programme playing through my stereo?

Or will I have to buy a separate DAC for the TV?

Many thanks for any advice or help you can provide.

Hi

Yes, Please connect the optical digital output of the TV to the optical input of Pro plus with the included cable.
If you set the TV's audio output to external speakers, sound will be output via the stereo through Pro Plus. Spotify and the TV can't be played simultaneously. (Is that what you wish?)

Like Wiimer said for connecting your TV.
Input selection will then happen via the WiiM App in the Browse tab.

With Optical Auto-sensing enabled, there is no need to switch inputs manually.🙂
(The automatic switching between Wi-Fi and Optical should function correctly.)

Other than described above you can also use the 3.5 mm headphone out of your TV and connect it to one of the analogue ins on your amp directly. There are such cables (3.5 jack to double RCA).
The advantage is that you can control your TV‘s volume through its native remote control. Connecting it via optical to the WiiM you will need to use the WiiM‘s remote for volume control.
The disadvantage is that you will use the probably inferior DAC of your TV. But they arn‘t as bad as they used to be. I would chose this route for volume control convenience. Input selection will then be on your amp.

Thanks to both of you that's marvellous.
So if I want to play music I would do that normally and select the music on my phone.
If the TV is on and playing it will play the sound through my speakers.

It sounds like I'd be better using the headphone socket as Aquaman suggested. So I wouldn't be using the WiiM at all for the TV?
I don't need a DAC to transform the sound into analogue for my integrated? Never knew that.

My wife will be using the TV and want to keep it simple, although I'm no better than her when it comes to technology.

In that config - TV to AVR via "headphone socket" - you will be employing probably the weakest DAC of the weakest Audio Component for "basic Stereo Sound" - that of the TV.
If you connect the TV to the Pro Plus by Optical (then WiiM to Amp) by RCA, you will be employing the much better DAC in the WiiM for either TV or Spotify (can't do both at same time).
If you connect the TV and the Pro Plus by Optical directly to the Amp, then you are using the DAC in the AMP. (As you haven't specified Make/Model we can't opine on which DAC is better - WiiM Pro Plus or Amp.)

Sorry I thought I'd thought I'd described it as an analogue integrated amp.
It's an analogue integrated amplifier (MacIntosh MA6900) so it doesn't contain a DAC.

Presumably if I use the WiiM with the optical cable, we'll be able to control the volume with the volume knob on my integrated.

Either that or on the WiiM in its app or its remote control. But not via the TV‘s remote control.
Forget about the DAC quality for TV watching.

Yes. You'll want to set the Line-Out volume on the WiiM to "Fixed". You also have the ability to tweak the "Line-Out Level" between 200mV/500mV/800mV/1V/2V to best match the Input Levels of your MA6900.

Thanks it's much appreciated.

It's good news anyway as I don't need to buy a separate DAC.

I'm not sure of the TV Audio tracks where you are located, but many (most) of us have Dolby Digital or DTS available on even Over-the-Air Digital TV. That, to me, is worth worrying about DAC quality.
Surely this would be an issue if one is using 5.1 systems or similar. I was referring to stereo.

Do you and your family frequently adjust the TV volume? For instance, if you simply switch between loud and soft volume at 2~4 levels, you could also use the preset buttons on the WiiM Remote. In this case, it can be convenient as it allows you to change directly to the desired volume.🙂

I'm in the UK, but we won't be listening to any music via the TV. The TV is for for my wife to be honest. At the moment she sits in the conservatory which can be cold, and expensive to heat, but our small back room which contains my hi-fi and my record collection, has room for a TV above the turntable. Any digital music I'll listen via Spotify through the WiiM.
