The original sounds Scottish, the new one is more like an English name. He himself was a German immigrant from Romania in the 1960s. Strange.

Normally just as a professional name but his children are Maffays as well.

I suspect that it might not have been his own idea, originally. His real birth name was Peter Alexander Makkay and I suppose his record company didn't want him to be confused with Peter Alexander:

Once they were at it, they probably felt like streamlining the hard sounding Makkay into something smoother ...

I met one of the guys from Typically Tropical in an Indian restaurant a few years ago. He was with a young local singer he was managing who had appeared quite frequently at events in the restaurant
