What products you'd like to see WiiM produce?

Digitising analog streams being "a bad thing" is another of these hi fi beliefs
Seems some marketeers don't believe you ;)

"Digital encoding strips away harmonic detail, leaving music devoid of life and emotion"
But guess what? They have a solution!
"Natural harmonic detail is restored, and the depth, nuance and musicality of the original performance is revived."
I wonder how a dac does that given the assertion that ADC itself causes the issue?

And another one
"reveal all the missing information buried within ... digital recordings."
Missing?

And to keep this on topic (sort of):
Maybe Wiim can create a WiiMagic dac (or is that too close to CA's DacMagic?) that does the same, 'cos I must be missing out?

The DAC in the Ultra is not that good. For one thing, the analog output section is just OK... that's why I run separate DACs over USB with much better electronics. But then, my cheapest DAC runs twice the cost of an Ultra.

So, if you read through these pages, you will see a call for a better DAC/analog output section for the Ultra.

ADC? I used to run an M-Audio Firewire 410.... nowadays I have the RME ADI-2 PRO FS R BE, but that's almost a magnitude more expensive than the Ultra.

When I look at the fashion mistakes my parents and lots of the 60, 70 and 80s artists made I am lucky flared trousers and plateau soles will have a comeback earliest when I am too old for it. 😉

(1) I never had disco clothes or Star jeans.

(2) In the very early 80s I wore Levi's, Hush Puppies and Lacoste shirts to the punk clubs in Hollywood and Huntington Beach. I was the true rebel... got lots of respect from the punks.

Was born in 79, so I did not really remember how I was dressed in the very early 80s. When looking at some pictures from the then adults I am glad about. Ciao for now, clock changed, the night was long and dirty and a hangover will be waiting for sure 😉 have to take something like an advanced power nap.

With your Levis, Hush Puppies and Lacoste shirt, the punks tolerated you at best as a strange mascot and put up with you 😂

Most of the punks were under 21... I had a college degree, a job, my own place, a running car and a credit card that wasn't maxed...

Girls loved me.

Oh, I met this punk one night at the bar. While the kids were body slamming each other to death, we were at the bar drinking boiler makers. He had the most awesome mohawk with spikes... about five inches long. So we started shooting the breeze... turns out he had a business BA from USC and was the assistant manager at a Radio Shack up in Reseda.

I asked him about his hair and ear piercings... He said he washed it all out (lots of hair spray) and took out his piercings when he went to work. He wore clip on ties to his job.

We both thought it was really funny.

OK, and I don’t mean to sound dismissive: they were US punks (I’ve done a bit of research into the punk movement in the US). In Germany, punks were definitely an authentical deal... And I reckon that’s even more true in the UK 😉

Hollywood punks. The best.

You can keep those grimy, working class, angry proletariat Euros away from SoCal.

We're just white punks on dope
Mommy and daddy live in Hollywood
And I'd hung myself
If I had some rope.

Then you had the Valley Girls. Oh, so sweet!

I absolutely despise the New Yorkers and Easterners who make fun of us....

I mean, yes, I take THE northbound 405 to THE eastbound 55, then all the way to THE 91 and then THE 15. That how we go to VEGAS from THE OC.

That SNL article about "The Californians" was just a bunch of jealousy from people living in grimy cold, wet places.

Pfffft.... heck, I met my wife "Hey babe, you wanna dance?". It was out of a Frank Zappa moment. I dug Soul Train, she did American Bandstand... yet we loved dancing together.

Still together.... happily... in THE OC. Our Lips Are Sealed...

That was a glorious time... The GoGos, Fun stuff, before AIDS, before Mothers Against Every Thing That Is Fun. Zappa was alive and making some awesome music, before CDs destroyed the sound of music.

because the fur trapper was

Strictly Commercial

I saw Zappa live. Joe's Garage.... He did play that song.. We were like singing along ROTFLOL...

Shaped like a U47.

Is that a real poncho or a Sears poncho?

I love Zappa... I've downloaded from Tidal HiFi something like 150 hours of Zappa... LPs and live concerts. All of it is CD quality or High Rez.

My wife always wondered about those quotes... until the fateful all night drive from THE OC to the Puget Sound on THE 5. Kids and wife were asleep, so I put the CD of Apostrophe (this was before smart phones) into the car stereo. I kept it low... just grooving along with the Botts Dots and the band... at some point my wife woke up and mentioned to me "Aaah... so that's where you got those phrases"..

A classic moment in life.

The mostly-retired tech product marketing exec in me wants to weigh in on this 'WiiM product roadmap' again. I'm considering why I bought the (3) WiiM products I now own, and where I would steer WiiM's product evolution in trying to do what's best for the company. At a high-level:
  • Build on WiiM design and software innovation successes
  • Stake out a true 'Value-Add' in the 'Home Theater' space (or stop dabbling therein)
  • Avoid the also-ran 'Chi-Fi' commodity speaker driver repackaging trap (that WiiM now seems to be chasing)
I bought my first WiiM, a mini, because it was the best [selling] way to connect an existing sound system to my network on Amazon.com. I didn't really register that it could do more - room correction and editable PEQ filters. I would love to look at overall revenue and margin numbers at WiiM, but I'm guessing the WiiM Mini's cash cow @ $89 is worth building on:
1774812662489.png

I bought the WiiM Ultra next because I was struggling to manually tune a 2.1 channel stereo system's subwoofer crossover/phase, so I searched for an affordable miniDSP-type-component and went with WiiM's capable offering (being familiar with the brand). My point is, as WiiM gains brand recognition from the success of it's streamers and respectable amps, it really needs to market its unique high-value DSP-functions and quality software chops more effectively and energetically - having owned the mini for a while, I still was unaware of how WiiM's other products could make my HiFi experience better.

To build on that WiiM value, one can now assign wiim-connected speakers to a home theater as a center or surround channel - this is the 'dabbling' I speak of in the Home Theater space that needs better rationalization and functional follow-up. My suggested WiiM Ultra 2.0 would therefore really step up the Ultra's 'streaming digital preamp' game into Home Theater by adding a proper AV SoC with (in AND out) HDMI 2.1 ports, 4K [8k?] pass-through for external streamers (GoogleTV, FireTV, Apple TV 4K, Roku, etc.). This allows for a lot of possibilities in terms of DSP functions, RoomFit and Subwoofer Integration enhancements etc. It also enables an On-Screen Display (OSD) UI capability as well as AV info-related overlays on the screen.

I guess I'm just impressed with how the WiiM Ultra sorta carves out its own place in an existing 2.1 channel stereo system - and it makes that system sound objectively better! WiiM has an opportunity to carve out similar leadership adding similar value in the broader Home Theater space. I urge WiiM to design such a thing with the right quality components with necessary additional ins and outs for the new role and charge what it costs. At the same time, resist the "Black Label" urgings of those who are used to paying for 'audiophile snake-oil marketing'. WiiM's technical leadership branding in the modern hi-fi space would suffer if they released a ten thousand dollar DAC or whatever :-).

In the HT world, there is a hole for affordable surround decoders with simple switching.

It has gone to AVRs (which sound like sssss ) or $3000++. All of them with ridiculous numbers of channels.

A nice 7.1 or 7.2 or even a 5.1.4 surround decoder with three HDMI, one eARC HDMI, one analog stereo input and analog outputs with some room equalization OR a wireless connection to WiiM Sound like active speakers would be nice.

Don't try to support all the possible surround licenses... don't pay for Dirac, Audissey, etc... just leverage the main surround formats (Dolby, Atmos) and use the inhouse WiiM strengths: room correction, sound over IP, WiFi...

One of the big issues with setting up an HT is wiring the speakers. In particular the surrounds. A device under 1000 bucks that supported surround decoding, eARC with the TV and provided wireless for any channel would make for an easy to do system that has the potential to sound good.

I think WiiM is almost there with the parts of the puzzle, just needs to put it together.. Also make it look nice, not like those AVRs that are UGLY and overly complicated... and tend to make your HT obsolete every three years when the surround licenses change.

++

My use of the Ultras is so simple, it makes me sad sometimes... I mostly use external DACs. However, I must note that the one in the HT uses its built in DAC and it sounds good enough for background music. Yesterday I had it playing for hours some Thelonious Monk while we were cooking ( den and kitchen are adjacent... open plan ) and it sounded quite pleasant. The tone was realistic even if the soundstage was sort of shallow.

However, for my needs of a bit perfect bridge in a 2ch system... 300 bucks is a fair enough price to pay. If WiiM were to make such a thing standalone the volume would drop and it would become more expensive...

Yes. WiiM appears to have the skills to deliver such products. Producing a 'WiiM AV Ultra' could build on the winning formula. Done right, it would allow buyers to gently shove their $$$$ [but largely obsolete] AVR aside as a power-amp or whatever role(s) it's suited for.

In the meantime, they should release a new cash cow that shows off their Ultra's 'secret sauce'. A 2.1-channel Pro Plus upgrade (Ultra screenless down-grade?) designed to perfect existing stereo configurations with RoomFit/BassFit magic. This is sold as a 'right-tech' rejuvinating upgrade to all those poorly-configured subwoofers and under-provisioned 2.0 stereos out there. Such an emphasis on a "2.1-channel WiiM Mini Upgrade" would do wonders for polishing the WiiM brand using its best [existing] value prop.

This is my favorite episode... it's beyond hilarious...

Note how often Max would have a smoke. "What did he say?" "He said..."

A full size (rack size) preamplifier with a retro look like the latest Yamaha separates

What I like about the WiiM ethos is the compact, simple and restrained casework. It's not cheap but it's also not extravagant.

Those Yamaha cases are expensive.

BTW- heat sinks are pricey as well.
