I have my Ultra connected via optical to a pair of KEF LSX (original model) and it works well. The KEFs work as simple powered speakers. The main problem with them was that, like so-called smart TVs which eventually become dumb because none of the built-in features work any more so you have to resort to dongles, some functionalities never worked properly (DLNA rendering for example) and others only became available with a new SKU (HDMI) or would never be supported (EQ). I could have spent £1200 on LSX2s but dropping £339 on an Ultra has allowed me to remove an analogue switch, a TOSlink switch a Raspberry Pi running Moode and a phono preamp from my system. Feels like a win to me!
