Wiim connectivity and folder search on NAS

Just received my Wiim ultra today but doubting whether I should keep it. My questions:
- I have two wireless B&O bluetooth speakers. In the bluetooth settings of the Ultra I added both speaker. But when I select one speaker to connect, the bluetooth connection for the other is disconnected. Can the Ultra connect to two wireless speakers simultaneously (as in a stereo setup) or can it only connect to one bluetooth device?
- I have my music collection on my NAS. I actually bought the Ultra for my girlfriend to make it easier for her to play music from the NAS.
I can select a shared folder (genre) and it will the files in that particular folder on the Ultra. But I have one main folder called music with a LOT of genre subfolders with their own mp3 files. I haven't been able to find a way to do file browsing.
How can I make it so that on the Ultra I see the Music mail folder and can then move/scroll/select into it ON THE ULTRA (so not on my mobile) and select a subfolder and play only the songs from that subfolder? Is it even possible with the ultra to navigate through folders or can you only select one folder? And can selecting of a folder only be done through the app?
- I found the setting to change/disable the background images but can't find the setting to change the background on the home screen (that shows the player, preset etc.). How can I change this?

Lots of question, I know. Sorry 'bout that.

Welcome.

Bluetooth - hardly ever use it, but is it normal for any device to be able to send to more than one device at a time?
Honest question, not suggesting your expectation is unreasonable.

Nas - what nas? It sounds like you are accessing the music as a file system. Maybe install a music server, such as minimserver, on it.

On the ultra - I believe the only way being able to use the ultra screen to browse music will be (note future tense) from a drive of music plugged into the ultra's usb port. The screen size might prove to be an inconvenience here.
So basically, yes, use the app (or another app, such as bubbleupnp on android).

Background image on home screen - not possible afaik.

Yes, it is not possible to play from 2 Bluetooth speakers at the same time via Bluetooth on Ultra.

However, if your Bluetooth speakers support LE Audio, you may be able to play stereo over Auracast. (I have not tried this.)

I actually bought the B&O speakers for my home cinema and used a bluetooth transmitter on the beamer to send the sound to one of the speakers. The speakers have an option to connect to eachother and create a stereo setup. But the sound would often break during a movie, so I went for a cabled solution to a soundbar. For the Wiim, I actually researched before buying and all documentation mentioned that the Wiim could be linked to bluetooth speakerS. So with that, I assumed that meant that the device supports dual speaker setup. There are actually many types of splitters out there. Think of watching TV with your partner, both having a head set (can't imagine why I would want that but there are some out there) and then a splitter is inserted in the TV USB that then splits the sound to two receivers. This means that for the Wiim the best option would be to go for cabled speakers OR check out the splitter bluetooth solution and see if that works.

The NAS is a synology DS223. I create a shared folder on it and placed all my Mp3 files in there.
On my phone I can access it with DS Audio and that actually shows me the folders just like I want it.
But with the Wiim, in the app I added the shared folder that contains all the subfolders but in the Wimm device (on the screen) it doesn't show me any folders. Just all the MP3 files. That means I would always need the app to select which files to play, instead of being able to use the Wiim device as stand-alone browser (without needing my phone)

Not being able to browse files directly on the Wiim is actually a deal breaker. I could live with the bluetooth thingy because instead of using two bluetooth speakers I could replace that for a soundbar or two wired speakers but always needing the phone to select files is not what I was looking for.

Thanks for all advice!

Why don't you install the Synology Media Server on your DS223? It might not be the most advanced media server but it's definitely far superior to SMB file shares (shared folders).

Tbh, I’d skip that and just install Minimserver, even the free edition is much better than Synology’s own media server.

As far as I can see the AlbumArtist tag is not supported in the free Starter Edition. The Synology Media Server does at least support this ... for free. :P

But I just started trying it out for the first time. Documentation is very good, but for somebody not using any media server so far setup is still harder to do.

Sorry but I'm a real noob in this area. I already have the synology media server installed but I thought SMB has to be activated to access files through my windows laptop. I use that to drag movies from my laptop to a shared movies folder on the NAS so to be able to see them on my Zappiti media player and view them. Does SMB not have to be enabled then? I also have Plex media server installed to access files.

Hey thanks for the reply. What exactly makes Minimserver better than Synology's own media server? And if I use it should I then uninstall Plex Media server and the synology media server?

After some further reading it looks like the AlbumArtist tag is automatically included in the Artist tag, if present for an album. Oh well ...

Yes, you need shared folders enabled (using SMB services) to access files on your NAS from your Windows computer, that's correct. But that's not how you want to access your media files.

A DLNA media server - like e.g. the Synology Media Server or MinimServer) will scan your media library, read the tags and file structure and build useful indices to browse your files by. The server does all the heavy work and your WiiM Home app (or any other DLNA control point) can access your media library fast and easily, presenting its contents in many different ways. This includes stuff like sorting by artist, by album, by date, by genre and so on. Also things like alphabetical grouping (for indices based on certain tags) can be provided. This is one of the things MinimServer appears to do well ... but not in the free Starter Edition.

Generaly you only want to and need to run one media server on your NAS. Multiple servers are just a waste of resources. Every media server needs a minimum of configuration. The Synology MS will index the pre-defined photo, music and video shared folders by default (and if you started it). MinimServer will ask you to enter one or more content directories.

If any DLNA server is running in your network it should show up in the WiiM Home app under Home Music Share >> Media Servers. You should not have to tap the 3-dot menu and explicitely add a shared folder.

I will leave further explanation to those more knowledgeable with this topic. Personally I still think the Synology server is better than its reputation. :)
