New and ignorant. Have read and followed directions for setup and connection. So far there is a clock and headphone experience that is satisfying. Virtually no sound from towers even at full volume. Set 'maximum volume' at 75 in case my speakers wake up. Here is my setup:
>Wiim Ultra
>Pioneer AVR VSX 1128
>Speakers all PSB
Towers, Stratus Bronze (biwired)
Centre, Image 8C
Rears, Image 2B
Sub, Alpha SubSonic 5
>Other
Shiit Asgarde 3 Headphone Amp + DAC. Not connected.

Don't understand why the Pioneer is not recognizing toslink connection. The line out is working poorly. No life or volume in the music. My Pixel phone, Samsung tablet, YouTube all sound better than the Wiim Ultra at present. I have turned off, disconnected, unplugged all power and audio connections more than once. Nothing has changed.
Suggestions welcome. Plain English needed.
I'm guessing it's setting changes required at the Pioneer.
Thank you for reading this....

If no sound is produced by Optical, change the output resolution in the audio settings to 16bit/44.1kHz and check if the test audio plays properly.

Test permits 24/192 with sound working (on test only).
Changing output from Line Out to Optical Out produces no sound.
Additionally the Sub Out not working also....

Make sure on your pioneer it was set correctly whatever the optical label on the back. What it does the ultra is sending bitstream but the switch on your pioneer is not set to receive the optical. Look at the back panel and see what the label is.

Audio out OPTICAL chosen in wiim app. On the Pioneer I turned the front left knob to ,'TV' setting. Music is playing on Ultra/Tidal but no sound heard through speakers. If I change to line out and turn front left knob to 'C' there is music but no Sub...

Do you have coax cable? Try that ensure the receiver and wiim are on correct setting. If the switch in either device is not correct no sound would produce.

So playing the optical test audio works (with amp set to tv), but playing tidal doesn't? Strange.
To humour us, could you post a screenshot of the wiim app's 'now playing' screen?
Could you also try (just for testing) the suggestion to set a max optical output rate.

Max optical output selected was (only) playing the test music.
Playing now, line out from wiim, 'C' selected on Pioneer.

I think trying to deal with two issues at the same time isn't helping!

For my posts, referring to optical, I was hoping for a screenshot showing optical out.
However, I was also interested to see what the bit/sample rate of the music being played was, but 16/44.1 should be handled by any dac / optical connection and I'm assuming you have set max output of 192 rather than fixed resolution of 192 from what you've written.

Now, analog.
Dull and low volume is not how it should be.
I can't remember the exact menu name / option, but what value is set for the line out level? e.g. 0.5v, 1v, 2v??
It's also worth checking whether any EQ is accidentially enabled. Press the 3 dots in the now playing screen and it should show what eq, if any, is applied. Also worth trying to enable one of the eq options and disabling it again.

OPTICAL sound test accepted Max 24/192.
EQ has not been altered
Other is 2Vrms (I don't know what it means)
As all can see I don't understand how to choose settings. Instructions seem straight forward. Thinking the Pioneer needs to have optical setting change. Earlier post I showed a photo that the optical input TV No. 1 on the Pioneer can be assigned. How?
