This morning I come into the living room, and suddenly I hear the amplifier saying something (unfortunately I don't speak English), and it's flashing red. I open the app and see that I have to set up my new device.

I lost all my settings, presets, favorites... :(((

I really don't like any device that does anything by itself. I don't like "smart" speakers, and I don't have any at home and don't want any.
I may have said something when talking to my cats, so I took the batteries out of the remote, and put it back in the box.

It's the first time it's happened, and I hope it's the last. I just want an amp, a dac and a streamer.
I don't want any stupid "smart“ voice assistant and features.

Well... either it is a bug in the firmware, or a remote reset, or a mistake in the voice command.
I think I can rule out the voice command, that would be a big coincidence.

I can't 100% rule out some kind of random attack bot from the internet either - there's no info on where the device is connecting and why.

So I've blocked everything, only Tidal is allowed. I'll check the logs and see...

I think the voice is probably not Alexa, but an announcement from a WiiM device. The red flashing LED indicates some kind of error and you should contact support.

Yes, it blinked just like they say: reset to factory default. (White/Red).
I'll keep an eye on it. If it repeats, I'll report the error.

WiiM may factory reset when it loses its internet connection.

I don't think so. There are people who want to use wiim amo exclusively locally, offline. And if they do, that's an extreme bug.

I've experienced it a few times with my WiiM pro. Unplugging the LAN cable may cause it to reset.

The remote wouldn’t have been involved unless you had specifically held down the microphone button and spoken. Without doing that, there’s no interaction between you and any voice assistant.

I was thinking that's the way it should be.

I was wondering if a cat could somehow do it. Because when I noticed the reset, the cat was there.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Maybe the cat disturbed the power cable if it wasn’t firmly seated in its socket which caused the unit to short and reset itself?

I doubt the cat pressed the microphone button and asked “play ‘what’s new pussycat?’” 🤣

While there might not be any evidence in the logs, it might still be worthwhile reporting this thru a ticket to WiiM as while it might be possible for external factors to reboot the WiiM, they shouldn’t cause a reset.

:)
hmmm, no… the power cable it is tightly inserted to the stop. I'm careful with the cables.
If he does it again, I'll report it.

I'm also interested in this. It has happened twice to me. Once while we were actively using it. Remote was on a shelf as was my phone. Nobody was interacting with it, we were in the middle of watching a movie and it said something about factory resetting and I once I looked into the settings I had to set it up as if it was new. Really tired of setting up all settings and EQ for the third time. Beginning to think this device isn't for me.

Send feedback to WiiM through the WiiM Home App. This certainly should not happen at all.

My WiiM Amp has been rock solid in this regard since I got it.

I figured this one out. My WiiM Amp reset 4 times in a week. I have it sitting on my desk, and at first I thought it was a random reset, I figured out it was because HOLDING the FRONT PLAY BUTTON triggers a reset, and I have things on my desk that bump against that button, causing it to reset.

This is a really poor product design decision. I had to set up the amp again and again. My desk is small (it's my computer desk) and there's a reason why I bought the WiiM Amp - for its size. It replaced an old school Rotel RA-12, which is a much better amp but also much larger.

@PatriX I think your cat was leaning against the button. That's the reason why it reset.

I have created a ticket to WiiM Support to fix this. I hope they can reconsider the implementation of the reset function to only occur within the first 30 seconds of the hardware booting up, i.e. to reset the device, hold the PLAY button while powering it on.

This isn't really something you had to figure out on your own because the procedure is clearly described in the manual: :)

Pressing the play button for just three seconds puts WiiM devices in setup.mode, so you can e.g. change the network connection.

This is the very same behaviour for the other WiiM products. Most users seem to not press the play button continuously for 3 or even 10 seconds and expect the device to ignore it. Personally, I like your suggestion to only enable this function during a limited period after a cold reboot, but I'm not sure the majority of users will. It's been claimed to be "too complicated" already to change network settings ...

If you want to talk to WiiM directly, better use the send feedback form in the WiiM Home App. If you want others to rate your suggestion, you can post to the relevant "feature requests" subforum:

Be realistic. Nobody rtfm these days with consumer hardware.

I'm fine if it goes into Setup mode but doesn't fully erase all my settings. What happens is the 10s press often goes unnoticed, e.g. I have something on my desk resting against it, or a cat leaning against it.

If it's just the 3s setup mode which can be fixed with a simple cold reboot, I wouldn't be this annoyed.

I sent the feedback via their support ticket, they have acknowledged it. I just want to create more awareness here hopefully people who experience this issue realize... it's really the cat...

As a first aid measure,
Switch covers like this one may be helpful.

Here you all can vote for a Backup/Restore function:

Ha ha, brilliant, 😃😃👍👍
