Of course you can say you love Spotify for its app, recommendations and "especially for YOU" created content. But this article from the Blitzed! magazine should at least being of interest for some about this "legally" stealing company.

Spotify is the absolute worst company in the streaming market. I will never use Spotify or support them in any way. Daniel Ek told everyone all they needed to know (in more than arrogant fashion) when he said that the cost of creating content was "close to zero", enraging artists and music fans everywhere with that rather matter of fact and very inappropriate/out of touch comment.

The fact that Ek is sitting on a personal fortune of $7.7 billion while artists struggle to make any money from streaming tells you all you need to know about that company and it's jerky CEO, they need to be boycotted but unfortunately there are too many clueless fanboys for that to likely ever happen at scale.

I'm no fan of Spotify or their horrible business practices. That said I would like to point out the irony of complaining about "legally" stealing when you republished a magazine article here for all to read without compensating the publisher or author. Good read though. Peace.

My company lawyer months ago pointed out that as long as I own a paid copy and I do use it for private reasons it should be ok. If he is wrong I am guilty of many such issues. But of course you are right. Especially Spotify (and one or another company more) is a matter of heart for me. So I take the risk 😉

How much better are the other streaming companies really for smaller producers? I do notlisten to mainstream music, so smaller streaming companies ate difficult for me as they do not have a wide variety of - let‘s say progressive electronic music. So how much better is Apple Amazone and rhe likes for artists?

Agree with your assumption, the others are far from a charity either. Long before streaming music took off it was (is) the same problem with radio plays. The biggest artists got the most money and nothing really has changed since...

On second thought: Radio plays are worse. Forgot to mention that big radio and tv-stations often pay a flat fee to the rights company's so they can play what they please and don't have to provide playlists or playdata so this big chunk of cash is distributed by ratio and ends up mostly in the pockets of the big artists/labels. That has always been very unfair. In current times smaller artists have to make money with performances or other appearances, merchandise, sponsor deals and so on.

One thing I want to add:

What I really like about Spotify, are the suggestions you get because of your preferences. I got to know so many to me unknown artists, that I listen to now very often! And this continues again with listening to these refined genres and artists. Not sure if other streaming services can do that…

What this means: without Spotify I would have never listened to these artists! And they would have never got „my money“ - although too little!

Amazon Music does have a “discovery mix” that can play artists that I haven’t heard of, plus playing an artist station (which plays music similar to that artist’s) can similarly throw up stuff I hadn’t heard before.

Separately, listening to Radio Paradise has been a good source of new material for me over the years.

Well, that's really not a unique selling point of Spotify.

When I started streaming many years ago, I was also initially on Spotify and switched because of the constant and unfulfilled hi-fi promises. On the contrary (and even more so when I open Spotify today, horrible interface), I don't regret it, rather I should be annoyed that I didn't do it earlier...
It may just seem that way to me, but I think Tidal is also a bit more serious, more grown-up when it comes to suggestions. Spotify is more mainstream, Tidal is more in-depth.
Incidentally, I also had amazon music for more than a year, and I also liked it better than Spotify in terms of suggestions.

But like many things, it's a matter of personal preference.

To be fair, this snapshot from Tidal looks VERY similar to the mine in Spotify… 🥳
