Am I doing this right..?

I have my WiiM Ultra connected to the hdmi earc on my Samsung tv. The WiiM is connected via optical to my Cambridge Audio cxa61.
I’ve just read that the Ultra isn’t compatible with earc but everything seems to be working fine. Would it be better connected to a normal HDMI port?

Nope, it needs to be connected to the (e)arc hdmi port, of which there is normally (always?) only one on a tv.
Often the tv has a setting to configure the hdmi port to just arc rather than earc.
But if it's all working for you then there's nothing to worry about.
