Completed Beta Test: Samba (Feature now publicly available)

Beta testing concluded and stable version released to the public builds.
Hello everybody,

New to the forum and to my Wiim Ultra.

Browsing around the forum I´ve seem lots os people that have older NAS that only accept SMB1.

Will Wiim help those users (and myself) to be even happier and include SMB1 support ?

I would say it's highly unlikely.

Do you know how rudimentary SMB browsing is? WiiM doesn't index your music so you're limited to browsing by file/folder name, and the only artwork you'll see is during playback - assuming you embed your artwork.

No chance. Why would they implement a deprecated insecure protocol?

Off course I know. Been using it for years and love the experience as I´m sure lots of people that got older NAS also do. Really do not car for the DLNA bull.

Not bull at all, a well sorted database is fantastic, browsing by folders isn't. Not only is a super fast, but it arranges multi disc sets properly, genres, classical, singles, EP's soundtracks all sorted properly.

Suggest trying out a good DNLA server like LMS.

I use a raspberry Pi5, with music on a NAS.

A lot of people with an older NAS probably use something like a Raspberry Pi server to play music from their NAS. No DNLA bull 😃

Would you call LMS a DNLA server?

I agree stock DNLA is rubbish, ie synology or free minimserver, I have the latter installed enabled just if I need a UPNP device to access my music, but preference is LMS- and I wouldn't have bought a Wiim if it didn't support LMS

Yes but a much better one. Try installing LMS on a PC/laptop, install material skin, album and artist plugin, and using "release type" tag. I gurantee you won't go back to browse by folder. Here are some screenshots.

I'd still be using my Squeezebox Touches if Wiim didn't have LMS support.

I already use LMS and also wouldn't have bought a WiiM if it didn't have Squeezelite. Not too bothered about "Releases" or "Works" though 😃

@WiiM Support - any hints at what additional features are being worked on around Samba? Any chance it's including Samba shares in search results? I know the Sonos refugees around here would appreciate that. If it worked the same as USB folder search does, that would be fantastic.

I wouldn’t describe USB search as a folder search, it’s searching a structured UPNP server/database. I don’t recall WiiM talking of any additional features for Samba shares. Don’t you have the option of installing something like Minimserver for that share?

Sure; I do. But, I'm not the average customer / former Sonos user with attached network storage. The average customer with a basic NAS bought from Best Buy or wherever doesn't know the first thing about setting up a server or a pi or a whatever. Just knowing the IP for their NAS would be a push. As for how USB search works... however it works is irrelevant to an end user. They just know they can stick their drive into an Amp (Pro) and WHA search "just works." With Sonos, their NAS smb support "just worked." Right now, that's not the case for WiiM, which is why I'm asking @WiiM Support if there are plans to improve this integration. As it is right now isn't as helpful for the mass of the market as it could be, and is at a comparative disadvantage with Sonos.

As for me, I'm testing a variety of approaches to network storage right now, including minimserver, LMS, Plex, AssetUPnP, miniDLNA, and samba. So far, they all have their issues, but I'm still playing around.

What issues are you having?

Oh Sonos just works? I have a Sonos here and it's door stop. Can't even sell this piece of junk. App doesn't load, S1 app says this product has been upgraded to S2 so please use S2 app. S2 app just halts during loading.

:) I may be working from a bit of memory here. I have a Sonos graveyard that hasn't been used for at least a year, most pre-app-ocalypse for Sonos. I did set up a network share from my surround setup (the only Sonos remaining...) to double-check that it worked the way I remembered, and it did, but you had to fight through the app to get it going. The older, simpler app made smb access and search super easy.
