Compensating for EQ gain boost?

What is the correct approach to compensate for gain boosts in RoomFit/(P)EQ in order to avoid clipping?

I’ve read somewhere that the volume limit feature can be used for this. Would that have the same affect as setting negative pre gain in the input options, but for all inputs?

If the volume limit can be used, how is that percentage scale converted into decibels? From my measurements it seems like 5% is around 3dB, and that the scale is linear. Since my maximum gain increase in EQ is 4dB, I have currently set volume limit to 90%. Am I making the correct assumptions here? 😀

Edit: I found some posts on the same topic and it seems I’m on right path here.

While measuring I also noticed that the volume limit and volume control are different. Both seem to be linear but volume limit decreases the output twice as much as volume. For example, 95% volume limit is ~-3dB and 95% volume is ~-1.5dB. 50% volume limit is ~-32dB and 50% volume is ~-16dB.

It’s a side effect but since I have replay gain on all my library I got around 12dB headroom 👍
At least from my own library I think I’m safe.

Another option would be to apply a general gain to all inputs calculated from the EQ applied.
This would be a very nice feature to add to RoomFit 😇

I believe the per-input pre-gain is the easiest way at the moment. It is already in dB, and it is set per input (just like EQ) which is also convenient.

I measured the relation of both the volume and volume limit on my WiiM Mini and in my case I saw that both behaved the same (e.g. 50% volume and 100% volume limit gave the same output as 100% volume and 50% volume limit.

Here you can see the detailed measurements, and here is the summary table:

In this post I measured a similar relation on the WiiM Amp Pro as well.

It would be nice to have those numbers displayed in the app and Ultra screen when modifying the volume.

That’s interesting, on the Ultra both scales seem to be linear (I only measured down to 50% though), but volume limit attenuation is twice that of volume. I wonder why it’s different on different WiiM products…
