Lost media controls with galaxy watch 6

When I first installed the ultra, my galaxy 6 classic could use its media controller to control volume, skip tracks... etc. It doesn't work anymore. I've tried allowing all permissions on both my s24ultra and the watch. As a last ditch effort, i tried pairing it to the ultra in the bt input mode. It did pair, but it doesn't work when I switched back to wifi. Anyone know how to get it to work again? This functionality used to work great.
