I am having an issue with my gain structure. My Hypex power amp is 380 watts @ 8 ohm (8 ohm - 26.8dB/2.5Vrms). The wiim ultra output is set to 2vrms. I am using 6-ohm 84db sensitive speakers. At max wiim volume, I am only able to measure 70db from the speakers. I am using RCA to XLR cables. Could the output voltage combined with the lower sensitivity speakers be the issue with the low volume? This is across the board on all inputs (toslink/hdmi/wifi).

I believe your issue is the RCA to XLR cables. RCA interconnects standard is 2.0 volts at 0db full scale (dbfs). XLR standard is 4v 0dbfs. The amplifier has to lower the gain of the XLR input because it assumes a higher voltage signal. Since you are probably passing 2 volts through XLR your amplifier is only seeing it as ~50% volume.

Is there reason you went rca to xlr? Xlr only helps if you’re experiencing ground loop between the line and interference. It does not make your music sound better than your rca. I’m seeing users requesting future product with xlr without knowing what it does or how it works. They just want it without knowing the facts.

Thank you, this makes sense to me.

My original separates were XLR but I've since changed to the WiiM.

Is there any workaround for this short of buying a preamp or new power amp?
